A file number is a unique 15-character alphanumeric code on the last page of your Indian passport. You will get this file number from the Passport issuing authority during the passport application process. This file number helps you to track the status of your application, helps in the verification of a person's identity, and to manage application flow easily.

Here is the step to get your file number. If you have lost it while you were travelling, you need to go to your email, check for the registered email or SMS for the Passport Seva Kendra, log in, go to the saved/Submitted applications, and then click on the customer services or go to the regional Passport Seva Kendra.

You will find the file number in your Indian passport in the bottom section of the last page of your passport. You will also get your file number on the application receipt, which you get online or offline, and the acknowledgement slip, which you will get after filling in the passport application file number, or through logging in to the online passport seva website and navigating to the view saved/submitted applications.

Here is a view of how the file number looks in the Indian passport. For this, here is an example of a file number, which is: MUB25B4003725525, in which MU is the code of the city, which is Mumbai, 25 is the year, which is 2025, and B4003725525 describes specific digits.
