What is a File Number in Indian Passport?

I'm based in Australia and recently applied for passport renewal. The file number helped me track older passport records when I needed clarification regarding a previous application.

As far as I know, newer passports still include a file number, although its placement may differ slightly depending on the passport booklet version.

You will find the file number in your Indian passport in the bottom section of the last page of your passport. You will also get your file number on the application receipt, which you get online or offline, and the acknowledgement slip, which you will get after filling in the passport application file number, or through logging in to the online passport seva website and navigating to the view saved/submitted applications.
