What documents are required for Indian passport surrender in the USA?

Hi everyone,

I recently became a US citizen through naturalization and now need to surrender my Indian passport. I’m trying to prepare the documents correctly before submitting my application through VFS Global in the USA.

I have my original Indian passport, US passport, Certificate of Naturalization, and proof of my current US address. I understand that I need to complete an online government application and then follow the VFS application process, but I’m not completely sure which supporting documents are mandatory.

Do I need to submit photocopies of every page of my Indian passport, or just the first and last pages? Also, is a notarized affidavit required for everyone, or only for certain situations such as a change in appearance or signature?

I have seen different checklists online, and some seem to be for applicants who have lost their Indian passport rather than those who still have it. I don’t want my application delayed because I followed the wrong checklist.

I’m applying as an adult and still have my latest Indian passport. If anyone has recently completed the Indian passport surrender process in the USA, could you share which documents you submitted and whether you applied by mail or appointment?

I know requirements may vary depending on the applicant’s circumstances, so I’ll check the current official checklist before sending anything. Thanks!

One more thing: if you still have your last Indian passport, make sure you select the correct application category. The process for someone who has lost their passport involves different supporting documents, including a loss affidavit and potentially a police report.

For an adult application with the passport available, I would prepare the original Indian passport, the current US passport copy, proof of naturalization, the government application, address proof, photographs, and the forms and payment evidence listed in the current VFS checklist.

VFS also has separate checklists for minors. If you're applying for a child, don't simply reuse the adult checklist because parental authorization and other documents may apply.

The current application instructions also require applicants to upload the specified photograph, signature, and supporting documents during the online process where applicable. Check the instructions shown in your application workflow before mailing the physical package.

If you tell us whether you have your latest Indian passport and which state you live in, someone may be able to point you toward the relevant jurisdictional instructions.

I completed this after becoming a US citizen too. The biggest thing I learned was to make sure the government application and VFS application details matched exactly.

Check your name, date of birth, Indian passport number, US passport details, and address before printing anything. If your name changed during naturalization or your documents show different names, check the checklist for the supporting evidence needed for that situation.

Also, don't confuse the Certificate of Naturalization with the US passport. The San Francisco Indian Consulate's guidance specifically says a copy of the US passport is required and that an application cannot be accepted without it. Your applicable consulate's instructions should be checked for your own case.

I would keep scans of the entire package and your VFS receipt before mailing it. If you use a postal application, keep the courier tracking information as well.

I can't say that every consular jurisdiction handles every document in exactly the same way, so use the checklist linked through your own VFS application rather than relying only on an older forum post.

I would start with the VFS checklist specifically titled for an adult who possesses their most recent Indian passport. There is a separate checklist for people who no longer have their passport, and the requirements are not the same.

For my application, I prepared the completed government application, the original Indian passport, a copy of my current US passport, proof of my US address, photographs, and the forms listed by VFS. I also checked the signature instructions carefully before sending the application.

One detail people sometimes overlook is that the application address should match the address evidence accepted in the checklist. VFS lists documents such as a state-issued ID, driver's license, recent utility bill, or lease, subject to its stated conditions.

I wouldn't assume that every applicant needs every affidavit mentioned online. Some forms apply only to particular circumstances, such as a lost passport or a minor applicant.

The checklist can change, so download the current version from the official VFS India USA renunciation page before submitting your package.
