I recently acquired Canadian citizenship after living in Canada for several years. I am now planning to surrender my Indian passport and apply for a Surrender Certificate before starting my OCI application.
I have checked the BLS website and the Indian Consulate's instructions, but I am finding different processing timelines online. Some people mention that their Indian passport surrender application was completed within two weeks, while others say it took more than a month.
I want to understand how long the process actually takes when applying from overseas.
I still have my original Indian passport, and I have my Canadian citizenship certificate and Canadian passport. I understand that I need to submit these documents along with the surrender application, but I am unsure whether the processing time starts from the day I submit everything at BLS or from the day the application reaches the Indian Consulate.
I also need the Surrender Certificate for my OCI application, so I am trying to plan both applications without unnecessary delays.
I applied for my Surrender Certificate from the UK, and my experience was a little different.
I submitted my application through VFS and received the cancelled Indian passport with the certificate after around four weeks.
Initially, I thought the process would take only one week because I had seen that timeline on an older High Commission notice. However, the actual time was longer.
I also noticed that people sometimes confuse the surrender of an Indian passport with renunciation of Indian citizenship. Although these processes are connected, the applicable documentation and processing requirements can differ.
If you are applying after acquiring Canadian citizenship, check the current instructions for your Indian Consulate and BLS jurisdiction.
Another suggestion: don't book anything that depends on receiving your Surrender Certificate by a particular date. Even if the published timeline looks short, postal delivery, document checks and additional verification can affect the total time.
I completed my Indian passport surrender in the USA recently. In my case, the application took approximately three weeks after it reached the Indian Consulate.
One thing I would point out is that VFS processing and consulate processing are two different stages. When you submit your application at VFS, it first goes through their document handling process before being forwarded to the Consulate.
The processing clock mentioned by the Consulate may start only after it receives the complete application.
I submitted my original Indian passport, US naturalization certificate, US passport copy, application form and photographs. I also included the photocopies requested in the checklist.
The application was processed without any additional document request. Once it was completed, my cancelled Indian passport and Surrender Certificate were returned through the delivery option I had selected.
I would suggest checking the processing time published by the specific Consulate handling your application rather than relying on timelines shared by applicants in other US states. Different consular jurisdictions can have different turnaround times.

I helped my parents with their Indian passport surrender applications after they acquired Australian citizenship.
Their applications were submitted together, but the status updates did not arrive on exactly the same dates.
One application was completed earlier, while the other took longer because the Consulate needed clarification about an older passport record.
From what I understood, the timeline is not always the same even when two people submit applications through the same service provider.
I would recommend checking these things before submitting:
For tracking, keep your application reference number and courier receipt. If the application remains pending beyond the published processing period, contact the service provider using the official enquiry channel.
Also, remember that the processing time for a Surrender Certificate is separate from the processing time for an OCI card. You should account for both if you have an upcoming travel plan.
