I applied for the reissue of my Indian passport in India a few weeks ago, but the application seems to be delayed because of police verification. The Passport Seva website still shows that the verification process is pending, and I haven't received a clear update about when it will be completed.
I attended my appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra, submitted my documents, and received my application file number. Since then, I've been checking the online tracking page regularly, but there hasn't been much progress.
I'm not sure whether the police station has received my verification request or whether the report has already been submitted and is waiting for the passport office to process it. I also want to know if I should visit my local police station or wait for them to contact me.
Has anyone recently experienced a delay in Indian passport renewal due to police verification? How did you check whether the verification was pending at the police station or with the passport office?
I'd appreciate advice on checking the status online, contacting the right department, and raising a grievance if the process has been pending for too long. I don't want to make unnecessary visits if there's an easier way to find out what's happening.
I would contact the local police station if the verification has been pending for a while, especially if you haven't received a call or a visit from the verification officer.
In my case, I would first want to confirm three things: whether the request reached the police station, whether any documents or a visit are still required, and whether the verification report has been forwarded.
You can also call the official Passport Seva National Call Centre at 1800-258-1800. The official helpdesk confirms that applicants can check their application status by providing their file number and date of birth, and it also accepts grievances.

If you have already completed police verification, mention that when contacting the helpdesk. The report may still be awaiting submission or processing, so it's worth confirming the current stage rather than assuming the application is stuck at the police station.
You can check the application status through the official Passport Seva website. You'll need your passport application file number and date of birth.
Use the Passport Seva application status tracker, select the relevant application type, and enter your details. The portal displays the latest status recorded for your application.
Passport Seva
One thing to remember is that the passport tracking status may not show every step happening within the local police department. If it continues to show that police verification is pending, contact the police station responsible for your residential address and ask whether it has received the verification request.
Keep your application receipt and file number handy. If the police station hasn't received the request, you can ask the Passport Seva helpdesk which office currently has responsibility for the next step.

Don't overlook the possibility that your local police department has a separate verification-status service.
For example, the National Government Services Portal lists police verification tracking services for certain jurisdictions, including Hyderabad and Mumbai. Availability depends on your city or state.
National Government Services Portal
If your area has such a service, check whether it can show the status using your passport application file number.
If you can't get a clear answer from either the police station or the online tracker, you can register a grievance through the official Passport Seva portal or contact the National Call Centre.
I wouldn't submit another passport application just because verification is taking longer than expected. First establish whether the existing application is awaiting police action, a report submission, or a decision by the passport office. The appropriate next step depends on that information.
