Hi everyone,
I applied for an Indian passport surrender certificate after becoming a US citizen, but my application is taking longer than I expected. I submitted my application through VFS Global and included my original Indian passport, US passport copy, Certificate of Naturalization, address proof, and the other documents listed in the checklist.
I received confirmation that my application had been submitted. The tracking page later showed that it had been forwarded to the Indian consulate, but I haven't seen a meaningful update since then.
I'm not sure whether the delay is normal or whether I should contact VFS. I have checked my email, including the spam folder, and haven't found a request for additional documents. I also need the surrender certificate for my OCI application, so the delay is affecting my plans.
For people who recently applied for an Indian passport surrender certificate in the USA, how long did it take after the application reached the consulate? Did your status remain unchanged for several weeks before the certificate was issued?
I'd also like to know whether contacting VFS is useful at this stage or whether I should wait until the published processing estimate has passed.
I understand processing times vary by consular jurisdiction and individual case. I'm mainly trying to figure out the appropriate next step without creating a duplicate application or sending documents unnecessarily.
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
If the published processing estimate has already passed, I would follow up rather than waiting indefinitely.
For US applicants, the San Francisco consulate publishes a general processing estimate of 21 working days from the date the application reaches the consulate. That estimate excludes the time needed to transfer the application between VFS and the consulate and back again. Other consular jurisdictions may have different timelines and escalation instructions.
When contacting VFS, include your full name, application reference number, date of submission, and the latest tracking status. Ask whether the application has reached the consulate and whether any additional documents or payment are required.
I would avoid sending repeated messages through multiple channels on the same day. Keep a record of your inquiry and any response you receive.
If VFS cannot clarify the delay, check your consulate's official page for its escalation policy. Some consulates specify a minimum delay period before they will respond to direct inquiries about surrender or renunciation applications.
The important thing is to use the instructions for your own jurisdiction rather than assuming that the process is identical across the USA.
I had a similar concern when I applied through VFS. My status showed that the application had been forwarded to the consulate, and then there was a period when nothing appeared to change.
I learned that the tracking messages represent different stages. An application being forwarded to the consulate doesn't mean the certificate has already been issued. It means the application has moved to the consular processing stage.
I would check the tracking page using your government application reference number or ARN and date of birth. Also check whether the status is shown on the VFS tracking page or on the Passport Seva portal, because the two systems may not update at exactly the same time.
If your application is still within the published processing estimate, I would keep monitoring it. If the estimate has passed, contact VFS through its official support channel and provide your submission date and reference number.
Don't send another original passport or submit a second application just because the status hasn't changed. First ask whether anything is outstanding or whether the application is still being processed.

Before assuming that the application is simply delayed, I would check whether the status says “On hold” or whether VFS has sent an email requesting something.
The VFS tracking guidance explains that an application can be placed on hold because of missing documents or payment. The notification may contain instructions about what needs to be provided, so check the email address used in your application, including junk and spam folders.
If the application is marked as being processed at the consulate, that is different from an application on hold. In that situation, compare the time elapsed with the relevant consulate's processing estimate.
I would also check the Passport Seva portal if you have access to your application reference. In some cases, a status update may appear there before it becomes visible in another tracking system.
If you receive a request for additional documents, follow the exact instructions in the notice. Don't assume a document is unnecessary just because it wasn't requested from another applicant.
Keep copies of everything you submit and retain the courier receipt. Those details will help if you need to raise a formal inquiry about the delay.
