Hi everyone,
I recently applied for an Indian passport surrender certificate after becoming a citizen of another country, and I’m trying to understand how long the process usually takes.
I currently live in Canada and submitted my application through BLS. I completed the online application, printed the form, and submitted my original Indian passport along with a copy of my foreign passport, citizenship certificate, photographs, and the other documents requested for my application.
I received an acknowledgment after submission, but I’m not sure whether the processing timeline starts from the date I submitted everything to BLS or from the date the application reaches the Indian consulate.
I need the surrender certificate for my OCI application, so I’m trying to plan the next steps. The status has not changed much since submission, and I’m wondering whether that is normal.
For those who recently applied for an Indian passport surrender certificate in Canada, how long did it take to receive the certificate and your cancelled Indian passport? Did you receive it within the stated processing time, or did it take longer?
I’d also appreciate hearing from applicants in the USA, UK, or Australia, although I understand the timelines may differ by country and consular jurisdiction.
Thanks in advance for sharing your experience.
I went through the surrender process in the USA, and I found it confusing because the VFS acknowledgment and the consulate processing period were not necessarily the same thing.
The Indian Consulate in San Francisco publishes a general estimate of 21 working days for renunciation certificate processing for US passport holders, counted from receipt at the consulate. It also explains that the transfer time between VFS and the consulate, and the return transfer, are additional. Other consular locations may publish different estimates.
Make sure you are comparing the same stage of the process. Someone saying they received their certificate in two weeks may be counting only the consulate stage, while another person may be counting from the day they mailed the application.
If your application is taking longer, check whether any email requested additional documents and whether your tracking number shows that the file has reached the consulate. Keep your receipt and application reference handy.
I would follow the instructions from the VFS centre handling your application and check the relevant consulate's current guidance before relying on anyone else's timeline.
I applied through BLS in Canada earlier this year. In my case, the application and document submission were straightforward, but there was a gap between submitting everything and seeing meaningful progress.
One thing worth checking is whether the processing estimate published by your consulate starts from the date BLS receives your application or from the date the consulate receives the complete file. Those dates can be different, especially for postal applications.
The Toronto and Ottawa consular websites have listed around 2–4 weeks for surrender certificate processing, while the Vancouver consulate has published a longer estimate of around 4–6 weeks. Your applicable consulate matters, so I wouldn’t compare your timeline with someone living in another province without checking their jurisdiction.
Also, allow time for BLS handling and return delivery. A certificate being processed at the consulate and the documents arriving at your home are not necessarily the same milestone.
If you have already passed the published timeline, I would contact BLS with your application reference and submission date rather than submitting a duplicate application.

I would first check whether you need a surrender certificate or are being asked to complete a separate renunciation process. The terminology can be confusing, particularly when people compare older applications with newer ones.
I’m in the UK, and the High Commission of India in London publishes a one-week minimum processing period for surrender of an Indian passport. It separately lists a longer period for renunciation of Indian citizenship. That distinction is important, and the published minimum should not be interpreted as a guaranteed delivery date.
The application also needs to go through the designated service provider, so submission, consular processing, and delivery can all affect the total time.
If you are applying for OCI afterwards, check the current OCI checklist for your jurisdiction and make sure you have the correct surrender or renunciation evidence for your circumstances. Requirements can change, and older forum posts may not reflect the current process.
How long has your application been pending, and which consular jurisdiction are you applying under? That information would make it easier to compare your situation with the appropriate published estimate.
