OCI Miscellaneous Application Status Not Changing: What to Do?

I submitted an OCI Miscellaneous Services application from the USA to update my passport details after renewing my US passport. The application was submitted online, and I completed the document verification process, but the status hasn't changed for quite a while.

My application was acknowledged on July 18, and the status initially changed to “Application received and is under process.” Since then, I haven't seen any new updates when checking the OCI status online.

It's now September 3, so I'm getting concerned because it's been more than six weeks since acknowledgement.

I checked the application status using my application ID and passport number, but I keep getting essentially the same status. There isn't any message saying that additional documents are required or that something is wrong with the application.

My documents included my current US passport, previous passport, existing OCI card, and the photograph requested for the update. I also took the original documents with me for verification when required.

I'm not sure whether the status remaining unchanged means the application is actually stuck or whether OCI applications can sit at the same status for several weeks while they're being processed.

For anyone who has recently used OCI Miscellaneous Services in the USA:

  • How long did your application remain “under process”?
  • Did the status suddenly change without intermediate updates?
  • Is six weeks considered unusually long?
  • Should I contact the Indian Mission or wait longer?
  • Is there another way to check if a document deficiency has been raised?
  • Does the one-month processing reference start from online submission or acknowledgement?

I'm not traveling immediately, but I may need to travel to India later this year, so I'd like to know whether I should follow up now.

Has anyone had their OCI Miscellaneous application status not change for several weeks and eventually received an update?

I had a delay with an OCI Miscellaneous Services application too, but mine was for an address update rather than passport re-issuance.

One distinction is worth making: the OCI FAQ's one-month reference specifically relates to the grant or otherwise of re-issuance of the OCI card, calculated from acknowledgement. It doesn't necessarily mean that every type of Miscellaneous Services update will have exactly the same processing timeline.

The same FAQ confirms that Miscellaneous Services cover several different things, including new passports, changes in personal particulars and address/occupation changes.

So I'd first identify exactly what service you applied for.

If yours is a re-issuance application and you're already beyond the stated timeframe from acknowledgement, contacting the Mission makes sense. If it's simply an update, the processing time may not necessarily follow the same one-month wording.

I'd also keep your application acknowledgement, application number and document-verification details handy when contacting them.

Most importantly, I wouldn't panic based solely on the status page. Mine didn't provide much detail while the application was being processed.

My experience was actually different. Mine remained in process for quite a while, and then the status changed without any warning.

I was initially checking the OCI website multiple times every day because I thought there would be a sequence of detailed updates. That wasn't really the case for me.

The official status page simply allows you to check the current application status using the Application ID and Passport Number.

So if you're seeing the same status every time, that doesn't necessarily tell you what stage the internal processing has reached.

I would make sure you're checking the official OCI status page and entering the details exactly as they appear on your application. Also, check whether you received any email after document verification.

If your application was acknowledged on July 18 and you're now past the one month mentioned in the Miscellaneous Services FAQ, I think it's reasonable to contact the relevant Indian Mission and ask them to check the application.

Just don't assume that “no status change” automatically means rejection. If there were a problem, the Mission may contact you or request additional information, depending on the case.

Mine stayed at “Application received and is under process” for longer than I expected too. I was applying from the US for an OCI passport-related update.

One thing I learned is that the timeline shouldn't necessarily be counted from the day you first filled out the online form. The official OCI Miscellaneous Services FAQ says the decision for re-issuance is ordinarily made within one month from the date the application is acknowledged on the online system by the Indian Mission/Post/FRRO.

In my case, the status didn't change every few days. It remained the same and then moved forward without me receiving a detailed explanation of what was happening internally.

I'd first check your acknowledgement date rather than just the initial submission date. Also check your email, including spam/junk, because the OCI FAQ says an auto email is sent when the Mission/Post/FRRO acknowledges the application.

If you're already beyond the normal timeframe calculated from acknowledgement, I'd consider contacting the Indian Mission handling your application rather than submitting a second application.

I wouldn't submit another application just because the online status hasn't changed unless the Mission tells you to. That could potentially make things more confusing.
