Hi everyone,
I’m an OCI cardholder living in the USA on an H-1B visa. I have both NRE and NRO savings accounts with an Indian bank. Most of my savings are currently in my NRE account, but I need to move some money to my NRO account to manage expenses in India.
I’m confused about whether OCI cardholders are allowed to transfer money from an NRE account to an NRO account. I understand that NRE accounts are generally used for foreign earnings and NRO accounts are used for income received in India.
My questions are:
Can I transfer money directly from my NRE account to my NRO account?
Will the transfer affect the repatriation status of my money?
Are there any tax implications when transferring funds between my own accounts?
Does the bank require any additional documents because I am an OCI cardholder?
I’m planning to transfer a substantial amount, so I would prefer to understand the rules before initiating the transaction.
Has anyone with an OCI card and NRE/NRO accounts done this recently? How did your bank process the transfer?
Any experience with SBI, ICICI, HDFC, or other Indian banks would be helpful.
Yes, NRE to NRO transfers are generally permitted for eligible account holders. The important distinction is between transferring money from NRE to NRO and transferring money in the opposite direction.
NRO accounts are commonly used for income received in India, such as rental income, dividends, and other legitimate Indian receipts.
If you're moving your own funds from NRE to NRO, check whether the bank needs a specific transfer request or supporting information. Some banks may apply internal checks for larger transactions.
Also, don't assume that every amount in an NRO account can be transferred abroad without conditions. Repatriation rules depend on the source of funds and applicable FEMA provisions.
I would check directly with the bank before moving a substantial amount.
In my case, I transferred money from my NRE account to my NRO account with the same bank. The option was available through internet banking, although the exact process depends on the bank.
I’m also an OCI cardholder living in the US. I used the transfer option between my own accounts rather than sending money through an external remittance service.
One thing to keep in mind is that transferring money into an NRO account doesn't automatically mean the money has the same repatriation treatment as funds in an NRE account. NRE balances are generally repatriable, while NRO balances are subject to applicable restrictions.
I would recommend confirming how your bank records the transfer and whether any documentation is required for a larger amount.
My experience was straightforward, but bank procedures can differ.

I had a similar question when I wanted to keep some funds in my NRO account for property-related expenses.
The bank asked me to confirm the source of funds and account details. In my case, the process depended on the bank's internal requirements.
One clarification: OCI status alone does not determine every banking transaction. The applicable FEMA rules, your residential status, account type, and source of funds matter.
If your purpose is to pay expenses in India, explain that clearly to the bank. Ask specifically whether the transfer is permitted and how it will affect the funds' future repatriation.
I wouldn't rely only on another person's experience because account policies and documentation requirements can change.
