e-OCI Card for Existing OCI Holders: How to Download Online

I’ve had an OCI card for several years and recently heard about the new e-OCI card for existing OCI holders. I’m trying to understand whether I need to submit a new OCI application or if the digital card can simply be generated from my existing OCI record.

I’m a British citizen of Indian origin and my current OCI card was issued in 2022. I have the same foreign passport that I used for my OCI application, and none of my personal details have changed.

I logged into the OCI Services Portal recently but wasn’t completely sure which option I needed to use. I’ve seen references to an “e-OCI” option, but I’m not sure whether this is available to all existing OCI cardholders or only people who recently received a new OCI card.

A few things I’m trying to clarify:

  • Can an existing OCI holder download the e-OCI card without applying again?
  • Is there any fee for generating or downloading it?
  • Does the digital OCI card replace the physical OCI card?
  • Can I show the e-OCI on my phone when travelling to India?
  • If I renew my British passport later, will I need to update my OCI details before generating a new e-OCI?

Has anyone with an older OCI card actually generated their e-OCI recently? I’d appreciate hearing how the process worked for you and whether the information on the digital card matched your existing OCI.

I’ll obviously check the latest instructions on the official OCI portal before relying on it for travel, since the process is relatively new.

I generated mine recently as well. The main thing that confused me initially was whether the digital version meant the physical OCI card was no longer needed.

From what I understood from the official information, the e-OCI is a digital representation of the OCI card and doesn't replace the physical card.

I downloaded the PDF and saved it in two places. I also kept the physical OCI card with my passport.

The official e-OCI information says the downloaded card can be presented digitally at immigration checkpoints and to airlines when required. However, for international travel I'd still carry the physical OCI card and passport rather than relying entirely on a phone.

Also check the email/login details associated with your OCI account. If you no longer have access to the registered email, you may need to deal with that separately before accessing your OCI record.

So if your OCI is already valid and your details haven't changed, I'd start by logging into the official OCI portal and checking whether the e-OCI option is available on your dashboard.

My situation was slightly different because I renewed my foreign passport before looking into the e-OCI facility.

I wouldn't automatically generate the e-OCI using an old OCI record if your passport information has changed. First check whether you need to update the new passport details through OCI Miscellaneous Services.

The digital card is based on the information in your OCI record, so it's important that the underlying details are correct.

For someone who hasn't changed their passport or personal information, I believe the process is much simpler. You don't need to treat the e-OCI as another OCI application.

Also, don't confuse e-OCI download with OCI re-issuance. They're separate things. If your circumstances require an OCI update or reissue, that should be dealt with through the appropriate OCI service first.

That's just based on my experience, so I'd still verify the current requirements on the official OCI website.

I have an older OCI card and was able to generate the e-OCI card without submitting a fresh OCI application.

I logged into the OCI Services Portal with my existing account and found the e-OCI option. My existing OCI information was already available, so I just followed the instructions to generate and download the digital card.

I didn’t have to pay a separate fee for the download.

One thing worth mentioning is that I wouldn’t think of e-OCI as a replacement for the physical OCI card. I’ve kept my original physical card safely with my passport and also saved the e-OCI PDF electronically.

If your OCI details are already correct, the process seems fairly straightforward. My experience may not be identical to everyone else's, though, particularly if someone has changed their passport, name or other personal details since their OCI was issued.

I’d check the current instructions on the official OCI portal before travelling because this is a relatively new facility.
