Hi everyone,
I recently obtained my OCI card after becoming a Canadian citizen. I still have a regular savings account in India that I opened when I was an Indian citizen. I use it occasionally when visiting India and for some family-related expenses.
I’m confused about whether getting an OCI card changes my bank account status. I have not yet contacted my bank, so I wanted to understand the process before making any changes.
I’m currently living in Canada as a permanent resident and don't earn any income in India, apart from occasional bank interest.
Has anyone recently updated their Indian bank account after becoming a foreign citizen and obtaining an OCI card? I'm particularly interested in experiences with SBI, ICICI, or HDFC.
I want to understand the correct process and avoid any issues with my existing savings and payments.
I went through a similar situation after becoming a Canadian citizen. My Indian savings account was opened many years before I moved abroad.
The main thing I learned is that OCI status and FEMA residential status are not exactly the same thing. The bank needs to consider your residential status and account classification.
I contacted my bank's NRI department and explained that I was now living in Canada. They guided me on updating my account details and discussed the NRO account option.
I would suggest not assuming that your account automatically changes just because you received an OCI card. Contact the bank and ask them to review your status.
Also, if you have standing instructions or automatic payments, check how the account update might affect them.
My experience was specific to my bank, so I would verify the process directly rather than relying entirely on another person's timeline.
The distinction between citizenship, OCI status, and FEMA residential status is important here.
An OCI cardholder is a foreign citizen, but whether the person is resident or non-resident under FEMA depends on the applicable rules and their circumstances.
If a resident Indian becomes a person resident outside India, RBI guidance generally requires existing resident rupee accounts to be redesignated as NRO accounts.
However, you should first establish whether you qualify as a non-resident under FEMA. Don't assume that every OCI holder must immediately convert their account without considering their actual circumstances.
I would contact the bank with your foreign passport, OCI details, and current residential information. Ask them to explain whether redesignation is required and what happens to the existing balance.

I think you should separate two questions:
If you live outside India and qualify as a non-resident under FEMA, an NRO account may be the relevant account type for maintaining Indian rupee funds. NRE accounts have separate eligibility and repatriation rules.
The bank may ask for updated KYC documents, foreign address proof, passport, and OCI information. The exact list varies by bank.
Before making changes, check whether your account is linked to investments, insurance, loan payments, or other services.
I haven't personally completed this process, so I would treat these as general points to verify with the bank rather than a confirmed procedure for every OCI holder.
