I’m a British citizen of Indian origin, currently living in London, and I recently renewed my British passport because my old one expired. I already have an OCI card that I received several years ago, and I’m trying to figure out what I need to do to link my OCI details to my new passport.
My OCI card is still valid, and the details printed on it are correct. The only thing that has changed is my passport number and expiry date. I haven’t changed my name or address, and I’m not applying for a new OCI card.
I’ve seen different information online about OCI passport updates. Some people say you need to apply for OCI miscellaneous services, while others say you can simply update your new passport details through the OCI portal without visiting VFS.
I’m particularly confused about whether I need to transfer the OCI card physically or whether updating my passport details online is enough. I also want to know whether there is a fee and how long the update normally takes.
My travel plans are coming up in a few weeks, so I don’t want to arrive at the airport with my new British passport and old OCI card and discover that I missed an important step.
For those who have recently renewed a foreign passport after receiving an OCI card:
Did you update your passport details online?
Did you have to send your OCI card or old passport anywhere?
How long did the update take?
Can I travel with my new passport and existing OCI card after completing the update?
I’d appreciate recent experiences from OCI holders in the UK, especially anyone who has gone through this process recently.
Since you're in London, check the High Commission of India's current OCI instructions for the UK. They distinguish passport updates submitted within 90 days from applications submitted after that period.

That distinction is important because some older pages still describe the process as transferring the OCI booklet from an expired passport to a new passport and submitting the printed application through VFS. Those instructions may not reflect the latest arrangements for a straightforward passport update.
I would first establish whether you only need to update your passport particulars or whether your case involves something more, such as a change of nationality or name. Those are not necessarily treated as simple passport updates.
For a routine passport renewal, keep copies of your old and new British passports and your OCI card available. Follow the document-upload instructions displayed for your particular application.
If your passport was issued more than 90 days ago, read the High Commission's late-update instructions before submitting anything or paying a fee. The process may require additional steps.
One more thing: don't assume the update is complete just because you submitted the form. Keep the acknowledgement and check the status until the portal confirms the outcome.
I renewed my Australian passport earlier this year and initially thought I would have to get my physical OCI booklet reissued. The process appears to have changed, so please check the current guidance rather than follow older forum posts.
The Indian government introduced the e-OCI card in June 2026, and updated guidance says that a new foreign passport no longer automatically requires a new physical OCI booklet. Passport details still need to be updated through the official OCI portal.

The process I would start with is:
Keep your old passport copy and existing OCI card details handy. You may need them to complete the form.
I would also submit the update within 90 days of receiving the new passport. Check the instructions from your Indian mission because late submissions may involve an additional fee or a different procedure. I wouldn't book travel based on someone else's processing estimate, especially if your trip is only a few weeks away.

I had the same concern when my passport was renewed because I already had a trip planned to India.
The important distinction is between updating the passport details in the OCI system and obtaining a new physical OCI booklet. Under the revised 2026 guidance, a routine foreign passport renewal does not by itself require a replacement physical booklet.

I would keep the following with me when travelling:
However, I would confirm the current travel guidance before departure, especially if your application has an error, a change of nationality or another unresolved issue. Airline document checks and individual circumstances can also matter.
The official Indian mission guidance is more reliable than an older forum reply. If you are travelling within a few weeks, ask the High Commission whether your particular situation permits travel while the online update is pending. Don't assume that submission alone means the update has been approved.
