Can I travel to India while my OCI passport details are being updated?

I’m a British citizen of Indian origin living in the UK, and I recently renewed my British passport. I already have a valid OCI card, but I submitted an online request to update my new passport details in the OCI system.

My application is still showing as pending, and I’m due to travel to India in about two weeks to visit my parents. I’m worried that the airline or immigration officers might question why my OCI records have not yet been updated.

I haven’t changed my name, nationality or any other personal details. Only my British passport number and expiry date have changed. I have my old passport, my new passport and my existing OCI card, and I’ve saved the acknowledgement email from the online application.

I’ve read conflicting information on older forums. Some people say you must wait until the passport update is approved before travelling, while others say you can travel with both passports and your existing OCI card.

I don’t want to cancel my trip unnecessarily, but I also don’t want to run into problems at check-in or at the Indian immigration counter.

I would not rely on older forum posts that say you must always wait for the passport update to finish.

The Embassy of India in Washington, DC, has published a notice clarifying that there is no restriction on OCI holders travelling to or from India between the issue of their new passport and final acknowledgement of the passport-update documents in the online system. The Consulate General of India in Toronto published a similar clarification on October 21, 2026.

That is reassuring, although you should follow the instructions issued by the Indian mission responsible for your application.

I'd download or print the acknowledgement and current status report, and carry the old and new passports along with the OCI card. Before travelling, confirm that your OCI status remains valid and that your application is genuinely a passport-details update rather than a different service.

If you're flying soon, you could also contact your airline to confirm its document-checking procedure. The official government notice is the key reference for the OCI rule, while the airline can clarify what it expects to see at check-in.

I would prepare a small folder with the following documents:

    • Your valid new British passport.
    • Your old British passport, if you still have it.
    • Your existing physical OCI card or accessible e-OCI document.
    • A printout or saved copy of your OCI passport-update acknowledgement and current status report.

The Embassy of India in Berne also advises OCI holders travelling with a new passport to carry both the old and new passports to help facilitate immigration and passport-control procedures.

One important distinction: the official clarification concerns travel during a passport update. It shouldn't automatically be applied to every kind of OCI application. If you have changed nationality, name or other personal particulars, check the instructions for that specific change.

Also, don't confuse an application that is still being processed with one that has been rejected. If your status changes to rejected, read the message sent by the mission and resolve the issue rather than assuming the pending-application travel guidance still applies.

For a straightforward passport renewal, I'd follow the official notice, carry the relevant documents and avoid making assumptions based on older discussions.

I had a similar situation after renewing my British passport. My OCI passport update was still being processed when I needed to travel.

The most useful thing I found was the High Commission of India's official guidance for the UK. It specifically says that when a passport-update application is under process, an OCI holder may travel with the existing OCI/e-OCI card, old passport, new passport and status report, provided there has been no change in personal particulars.

So I would keep all four documents together rather than carrying only the new passport and OCI card.

Make sure you can access the application status report, preferably offline as well as online. I would also check that the names and other personal details match across the documents.

Your situation sounds like a routine passport renewal, but I'd still read the latest guidance for your jurisdiction before departure. If the application has been rejected rather than remaining pending, or if you have also changed your name or nationality, the advice may be different.
