I’m a US citizen and OCI cardholder living in California. I still have some financial commitments in India, so I occasionally need to send money from my US bank account to my Indian bank account.
My Indian account was originally opened when I was an Indian citizen. After becoming a US citizen, I informed the bank about my change in status and they asked me to update the account under NRI banking rules.
I’m now trying to understand whether an OCI cardholder can transfer money from a foreign bank account to an Indian bank account.
If I transfer money to my own NRO account, is that allowed through normal banking channels? Also, can an OCI cardholder transfer money to a family member's Indian bank account?
I’ve seen different answers online about NRO and NRE accounts. Some people say foreign remittances can be credited to NRO accounts, while others recommend using an NRE account for money sent from abroad.
Has anyone recently transferred money from the US, UK, Canada or Australia to an Indian account as an OCI cardholder? What type of Indian account did you use, and were any additional documents or declarations requested by the bank?
I’m mainly interested in understanding the normal procedure rather than any large investment or property transaction.
I'm an OCI holder in Canada and have been sending money to India for several years.
For my own account, I use an NRE account for money that I'm sending from Canada. I also have an NRO account for Indian income.
The distinction became much clearer once I separated the two accounts. Money coming from overseas can be remitted through normal banking channels, and RBI rules permit inward remittances as credits to NRO accounts as well.
If you're sending money to someone else's Indian account, though, don't assume that exactly the same rules apply to every situation. The purpose of the transfer and relationship with the recipient can matter.
For a straightforward transfer to your own account, I'd first make sure your Indian bank has your current foreign citizenship, OCI status and non-resident address on record.
Yes, I transfer money from the UK to my NRO account in India. I'm a British citizen with an OCI card.
In my case, I use my UK bank's international transfer service and provide my Indian NRO account details. The money comes through the banking channel and is credited in rupees.
RBI's guidance specifically allows inward remittances from outside India to be credited to NRO accounts. It also lists OCI cardholders who are resident outside India within the relevant PIO framework.
My bank didn't ask for anything unusual for the normal transfers. However, I had already updated my passport, OCI and overseas address details with the bank.
If your old Indian account is still classified as a resident savings account, I'd sort that out before regularly sending money into it. The bank's NRI department should be able to tell you whether it needs to be redesignated.

I had the same question when I became an Australian citizen.
One thing worth remembering is that OCI does not mean Indian citizenship. For banking purposes, your foreign citizenship and non-resident status are relevant.
RBI says an NRO account can receive inward remittances from outside India through normal banking channels. It can also receive legitimate dues in India.
So if you're an OCI cardholder living abroad and want to send your own money from your overseas bank account to India, an eligible non-resident account can generally receive the transfer.
I'd avoid relying on advice from random bank-branch staff if you're getting conflicting answers. Ask specifically for the bank's NRI/forex desk and tell them you're an OCI cardholder resident outside India.
