I applied for my OCI card in the USA about six weeks ago, and my application status has now changed to “On Hold.” The frustrating part is that I haven’t received any email explaining why it was put on hold or whether I need to submit additional documents.
I submitted my application through VFS and uploaded the required documents, including my current US passport, proof of my previous Indian citizenship, and the other supporting documents listed in the checklist. I checked the scanned copies before submitting everything, so I’m not sure if there is a problem with one of the documents.
I have checked the OCI status website several times, but the status hasn’t changed. I also checked my email, including the spam folder, and haven’t found any request for additional information.
I’m a little concerned because I have travel plans to India in the coming months. I understand that OCI applications can take time, but I don’t know whether “On Hold” means there is a document issue, a verification delay, or something else.
Has anyone experienced an OCI application being put on hold without an explanation? Did you receive an email later, or did you have to contact VFS or the Indian consulate yourself? I’d also like to know whether there is a particular way to ask about the reason for the hold without delaying the application further.
My experience was different. My OCI application remained under process for a while, and I didn't receive a specific request for extra documents during that period. That is why I wouldn't assume every delay means something is wrong with the application.
However, “On Hold” and “Under Process” are not necessarily the same thing. The official VFS tracking guidance describes “On Hold” as a deficiency-related status, so I would investigate it rather than simply waiting for weeks.

I would also compare the information on the government OCI status portal with the VFS tracking page. Make sure you are using the correct application or file number and passport details.
If you submitted a new OCI application after becoming a US citizen, double-check that the documentation relating to your previous Indian citizenship and passport surrender, where applicable, was included. The relevant requirements depend on your application category and circumstances.

If everything appears complete, ask VFS to confirm whether the application is still with them or has been sent to the consulate. That distinction may help you work out whom to contact next.
I would avoid submitting a duplicate application or paying another fee just because the status is unclear. First try to establish exactly what is missing, if anything.
I had something similar happen with my OCI application through VFS in the US. Mine showed “On Hold,” and initially I thought it meant the consulate had stopped processing it.
I eventually found an email in my junk folder. In my case, the issue was related to the supporting documents, even though I had followed the checklist. It was frustrating because I had already spent time checking everything before sending the package.
I would check the email address you used on the OCI application, including spam, junk, and any filtered folders. Also check whether the VFS tracking page gives any additional information.
The VFS tracking guidance says an “On Hold” status indicates a deficiency and that an email should identify the documents or payment needed.

If you genuinely haven't received anything, I would contact VFS through the official channel for your application and ask them to confirm whether a deficiency notice was issued.Keep your application reference number and submission receipt handy. I wouldn't send random additional documents without knowing what they need, because that could create more confusion.
One question: has your application already been forwarded to the Indian consulate, or is the hold showing on the VFS tracking page?

Let Visament guide you to the perfect solution for all your queries.
Have you checked whether the name, date of birth, passport number, and previous Indian passport details match across your documents? Those are worth reviewing if you haven't already.
For example, a difference in a name between an old Indian passport and a current foreign passport may require supporting evidence. That doesn't automatically mean your application is defective, but it's one area I would double-check alongside the photograph, signature, proof of Indian origin, and the applicable checklist.
The official OCI FAQ says that if the authorities identify a deficiency in an application or its uploaded documents or photograph, they should inform the applicant by email.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Since you haven't received an explanation, I would send a concise enquiry through the official VFS contact channel. Include the date you submitted the application, your reference number, the exact status displayed, and the fact that you have checked your inbox and spam folder. Ask whether an additional-document request has been issued and how you should respond.
If VFS confirms that the application is already with the consulate, follow the relevant mission's published enquiry procedure. Contact arrangements and escalation thresholds can differ by jurisdiction, so check the instructions for the consulate handling your application.
Also, if your India trip is approaching, don't assume that a pending OCI application gives you permission to travel. Check the current visa or entry requirements applicable to your passport before making travel decisions.
