How can I correct my name on my PAN card from abroad?

I am an Indian citizen currently living in Australia and recently noticed that my name is spelled incorrectly on my Indian PAN card. My passport has the correct spelling, but the PAN card has one letter missing from my surname.

I need to correct the PAN details because I use my PAN for my Indian bank accounts and tax-related transactions. Since I live abroad, I am not sure whether I can complete the correction online or whether I need to send physical documents to India.

I have a few questions:

  • Can I correct my PAN card name while living outside India?

  • Which application form should I use for a name correction?

  • Is a passport enough to prove the correct name, or do I need another document?

  • Can I submit the application online without visiting a PAN centre in India?

  • Can the corrected physical PAN card be delivered to my overseas address?

  • What should I do if my name is also different on Aadhaar or other Indian records?

I already have a PAN number, so I do not want to apply for another PAN by mistake. I only need to correct the existing details.

If anyone has completed a PAN name correction while living abroad, I would appreciate guidance on the process, documents and any issues to watch out for. I will check the official instructions before submitting the application, but it would help to understand the steps first.

Before submitting, check the name across your passport, PAN records and any supporting documents. A correction application can be delayed if the requested name is not supported by the documents or if the application details are inconsistent.

You can begin with the official Income Tax Department PAN page, which lists the current correction form and authorised service providers. The two authorised PAN service providers are UTIITSL and Protean.

If you need a physical card delivered abroad, check the communication-address options and charges displayed during the application. If an e-PAN meets your immediate needs, check whether that option is available for your correction request and which email address will receive it.

Keep your acknowledgement number and check the status through the provider's official tracking facility. If the application is marked deficient, follow the instructions provided rather than filing another application with a different set of details.

If the name correction is connected to a major legal name change or there are discrepancies across multiple records, it may be worth confirming the required evidence with the PAN service provider before you submit.

You can generally request a correction to your existing PAN details while living abroad. You do not need to apply for a new PAN just because your name is misspelled.

As of April 1, 2026, the individual PAN correction form is Form CR-01 under the revised PAN procedures. You can start through the official UTIITSL or Protean PAN service portal and select the change or correction option.

For a simple spelling correction, your valid passport showing the correct name may be relevant supporting evidence, but check the current document list for your specific correction. If the name changed legally after marriage or through a formal name-change process, additional evidence may be required.

I would make sure the corrected name matches the documents you are using as proof. If Aadhaar has a different spelling, check whether that discrepancy affects the application or any Aadhaar-based authentication method.

Also, check the overseas delivery option before paying. An electronic PAN and a physical card are different delivery choices, and the applicable fees can vary. Save your acknowledgement or application reference so you can follow up if needed.

I would first work out whether this is a spelling correction or a legal name change. The documents needed can differ.

If your passport already shows the correct name and the PAN has a typo, use the correction process and provide the supporting documents requested by the service provider. If your name changed officially after marriage or another legal event, you may need a marriage certificate, gazette notification or another accepted document, depending on the circumstances and current instructions.

Since you are overseas, do not assume every online submission method works for every applicant. The portals may offer paperless options, while some cases may require signed forms or physical document submission. Read the instructions for the method you select.

One practical point: UTIITSL's published payment guidance says international cards are not accepted for its specified online payment process. Check the current payment instructions before starting so you do not get stuck at the final step.

I would use only the official PAN portals, keep a copy of the application and payment confirmation, and avoid submitting a second PAN application. Your existing PAN remains the one to correct.
