I applied for my OCI card through VFS in the USA and my application was submitted to the Consulate several weeks ago. The VFS tracking page shows that it was forwarded, but I haven't seen much movement since then.
I have been checking the Government of India OCI status enquiry page, and it still shows the application as under process. I understand that OCI processing can take time, but I'm getting concerned because I have already been waiting longer than I expected.
I checked my email and spam folder to make sure I haven't missed a request for additional documents. So far, I haven't received anything.
For people who have recently applied for an OCI in the USA, what did you do when your OCI application was delayed? Did you contact VFS, the Consulate, or simply continue checking the OCI portal?
Also, how long did your OCI application stay under process before you received an update? I'm not looking for a guaranteed timeline, just trying to understand what others experienced.
I had a different experience because my application was placed on hold for missing documentation. I almost missed the request because the email went into my junk folder.
If your VFS status says something like “On hold,” definitely check your email carefully. VFS says applicants should review the requested documents or payment details and submit the required items together to avoid further delays.
If your status already says the application has reached the Embassy or Consulate, though, the situation is different. At that point, VFS may not have additional details about the actual government processing stage.
I'd keep screenshots of your current status and all correspondence. That helped me when I needed to explain when my application was submitted.
Mine stayed under process for several weeks after VFS forwarded it to the Consulate. During that period, the VFS tracking page didn't provide much additional information.
I mainly checked the Government of India OCI status enquiry page and my email. The official OCI portal allows you to check the current application status using your Application ID and passport number.
I wouldn't assume that an unchanged status automatically means something is wrong. Processing can vary between applications and missions.
If your application is still within the processing timeframe published for your particular centre, VFS itself advises applicants not to contact them unnecessarily during that period. Once it goes beyond the applicable timeframe, I'd check the current instructions for your VFS centre and Indian Consulate before deciding who to contact.

Let Visament guide you to the perfect solution for all your queries.
I'd first figure out exactly where the application is sitting before contacting anyone.
There are basically different stages shown through the VFS tracking system, including forwarded to the Embassy, reached the Embassy, dispatched from the Embassy and courier dispatch.
If yours has already reached the Consulate, check the official OCI portal as well. The Government of India's OCI website specifically provides an online status enquiry facility.
If there is an objection or the authorities need something from you, the OCI guidelines say relevant information can be displayed through the online status enquiry, with instructions for submitting the required documents.
I'd avoid comparing your exact timeline with another applicant because two applications submitted around the same date can still move differently.
