Hi everyone,
I am an OCI cardholder living in Canada, and I currently maintain an NRE savings account with an Indian bank. I opened the account a few years ago when I was visiting India, but I recently started reviewing my banking arrangements and realized that I had not added a nominee.
I want to add my spouse as the nominee so that my family can handle the account balance more easily if something happens to me. I also plan to open an NRO account for managing rental income from property in India.
I am confused about whether OCI cardholders have the same nomination facilities as other NRI account holders. I also want to know whether I can add a nominee while living abroad, without visiting the Indian branch.
I am also an OCI holder and maintain an NRE account in India. When I reviewed my account details, I found that nominee registration was a separate process from opening the account.
I would not assume that the nominee automatically receives ownership of the entire account balance. My understanding is that nomination helps the bank handle the deposit settlement, but the final entitlement may depend on succession arrangements.
If your spouse or children are based in India, ask your bank whether they can be nominated and what information is required. Also confirm whether the bank supports multiple nominees or allows nomination percentages, if that is relevant to your plans.
I recommend asking the bank whether you can submit the nomination form through an overseas branch or another approved channel. The process can differ between banks, so it is worth getting the instructions in writing.
Yes, nomination facilities are available for bank deposit accounts. RBI's nomination guidance covers deposit accounts, and being an OCI cardholder does not by itself prevent an eligible account holder from using the facility.
I added a nominee to my NRI account, but my bank required me to complete its nomination form and provide the necessary account details.
I would suggest checking whether your bank allows nominations through internet banking. Some banks may provide digital options, while others may require a signed form or additional verification.
One thing worth understanding is that a nominee is not necessarily the final legal owner of the money. Nomination generally helps the bank release the deposit to the nominee or facilitate settlement after the account holder's death. The nominee's legal rights and obligations can depend on succession law and other applicable circumstances.
Ask the bank for its current nomination procedure, especially since you are living abroad.

There are two separate questions here: whether you are allowed to nominate someone and how the bank will process the nomination.
RBI's nomination information explains that deposit account holders can register nominees to facilitate settlement after death.
For an NRE or NRO account, I would ask your bank:
Also, keep your nomination details updated whenever your family circumstances change.
A nominee arrangement and a will or succession arrangement are not necessarily the same thing. If you have substantial assets, you may want to obtain independent legal advice regarding succession planning.
