OCI Card Renewal USA – Timeline and Status Updates

I had the opposite experience — mine took considerably longer than the people posting here.

My application was submitted after getting a new passport, and I initially thought there was a problem because the VFS status and OCI status didn't appear to move together.

Eventually I learned that there are several stages involved, so the date you physically mail or submit documents isn't necessarily the same date used for the official OCI processing timeframe. The OCI portal specifically refers to the acknowledgement of the application on the online system.

I would also keep an eye on your email and spam folder. If the Embassy/Consulate requests additional documents, you don't want to miss the notification. VFS's current U.S. FAQ says requested documents generally need to be provided within 7 calendar days when such a request is made.

For anyone planning international travel, I would be especially careful about relying on a forum member's estimated completion date. Processing times can change, and the consular mission handling the application can matter.

In my case, the application eventually moved forward without me doing anything special. I wouldn't recommend sending duplicate applications just because the online status hasn't changed.

Mine was actually much faster, so there seems to be quite a bit of variation.

I applied from California and my application was acknowledged fairly quickly. I think the entire process took around a month and a few days. The status was not updated every few days either. It basically looked unchanged for a while and then moved forward.

One thing that confused me initially was the word “renewal.” Technically, depending on what has changed, you may be dealing with an OCI Miscellaneous Service/update rather than a completely new OCI application. The correct service depends on why you are applying.

If you only received a new passport, make sure you followed the instructions applicable to your age and circumstances rather than assuming you need a full OCI application again. The OCI Miscellaneous Services guidance distinguishes passport-detail updates and other miscellaneous changes.

I also wouldn't rely on somebody else's “OCI takes exactly X weeks” statement. The official OCI FAQ gives about 30 days from online acknowledgement as the normal timeframe for issuance, but individual applications can take longer.

If yours is already significantly beyond the normal timeframe, I'd check both VFS and the OCI portal and then contact the relevant channel if necessary.

My experience was pretty similar, although mine was a different U.S. VFS location.

I submitted my OCI Miscellaneous application in June after getting a new U.S. passport. VFS accepted everything without asking for additional documents. The VFS tracking moved fairly quickly at the beginning, but the OCI portal stayed at “Under Process” for quite a while.

I think I checked the status almost every day, which probably didn’t help my stress. There were no updates for several weeks and then the status changed without any warning.

In my case, the OCI approval came after roughly 6 weeks from the point when the application was acknowledged online. The physical delivery happened afterward.

One thing I would recommend is not comparing your timeline too closely with someone applying through a different consular jurisdiction. I found people on forums saying theirs took 3 weeks while others were waiting 8+ weeks.

Also, make sure you’re checking the official OCI status separately from VFS tracking. The OCI government portal has its own application-status enquiry.

So if your documents were accepted and there has been no request for additional information, I personally wouldn’t assume that “Under Process” means there is a problem.

One thing I would check carefully is whether your application is genuinely a reissue or simply an update of passport particulars.

I recently went through a passport-related OCI update myself. The new U.S. passport number was the main change, and I initially assumed I needed a complete OCI renewal. After reading the current instructions, I realized there are different OCI Miscellaneous Services depending on what has changed.

The VFS USA instructions currently say that passport-detail updates made within three months of receiving the new passport can be handled differently from updates made later.

For status tracking, VFS says you can track OCI applications through its U.S. tracking system using the government reference/application information and date of birth. It also notes that a new application may take several working days to appear in the VFS tracking system after submission.

If you're already seeing the application in both systems and there isn't an “On Hold” message or document request, I wouldn't repeatedly submit another application. That could create more confusion.

I'd keep your acknowledgment, courier delivery confirmation, application number and copies of everything submitted. If the application goes materially beyond the applicable published timeframe, then contact the relevant VFS/consular channel and provide those details.

My timeline was different, so I wouldn’t use another person's processing time as a definite benchmark.

The important thing is to identify which OCI service you actually applied for. People often call everything an “OCI renewal,” but an existing OCI holder may be using OCI Miscellaneous Services for a passport-detail update, while a reissue may be required in particular circumstances.

VFS currently says that passport-particular updates submitted more than three months after the new passport was issued have a separate process and lists an 8–12 week turnaround for that service.

So I’d compare your application type and submission date with the current instructions for your jurisdiction.

Also, don't panic if the VFS tracking page and OCI portal don't show identical wording. VFS explains that once an application has been forwarded to the Embassy/Consulate, the Consulate handles the processing, and VFS may not have additional status information until the card comes back.
