OCI Card Renewal USA – Timeline and Status Updates

One thing I would check carefully is whether your application is genuinely a reissue or simply an update of passport particulars.

I recently went through a passport-related OCI update myself. The new U.S. passport number was the main change, and I initially assumed I needed a complete OCI renewal. After reading the current instructions, I realized there are different OCI Miscellaneous Services depending on what has changed.

The VFS USA instructions currently say that passport-detail updates made within three months of receiving the new passport can be handled differently from updates made later.

For status tracking, VFS says you can track OCI applications through its U.S. tracking system using the government reference/application information and date of birth. It also notes that a new application may take several working days to appear in the VFS tracking system after submission.

If you're already seeing the application in both systems and there isn't an “On Hold” message or document request, I wouldn't repeatedly submit another application. That could create more confusion.

I'd keep your acknowledgment, courier delivery confirmation, application number and copies of everything submitted. If the application goes materially beyond the applicable published timeframe, then contact the relevant VFS/consular channel and provide those details.

My timeline was different, so I wouldn’t use another person's processing time as a definite benchmark.

I submitted my OCI passport update after receiving a new U.S. passport. My application appeared in the VFS system first, and then it moved to the Embassy/Consulate stage. There was a period where nothing appeared to happen for several weeks.

The important thing is to identify which OCI service you actually applied for. People often call everything an “OCI renewal,” but an existing OCI holder may be using OCI Miscellaneous Services for a passport-detail update, while a reissue may be required in particular circumstances.

VFS currently says that passport-particular updates submitted more than three months after the new passport was issued have a separate process and lists an 8–12 week turnaround for that service.

So I’d compare your application type and submission date with the current instructions for your jurisdiction.

Also, don't panic if the VFS tracking page and OCI portal don't show identical wording. VFS explains that once an application has been forwarded to the Embassy/Consulate, the Consulate handles the processing, and VFS may not have additional status information until the card comes back.

I had a fairly similar experience with my OCI reissue through the San Francisco jurisdiction earlier this year. Mine also stayed at “Under Process” for quite a while, so I wouldn’t assume something is wrong just because the status doesn’t change every few days.

One thing that confused me initially was the difference between VFS tracking and the OCI government status. VFS showed that my application had been sent to the Consulate, while the OCI portal continued showing the processing status. They are not necessarily updated at exactly the same time.

The official OCI FAQ says the normal processing time is about 30 days from acknowledgement on the online system, but that shouldn’t necessarily be interpreted as a guaranteed 30-day turnaround for every U.S. application.

I would check both systems using your application/reference details rather than relying only on email notifications.

Also check your spam folder. VFS says applications can be placed “On hold” if there is a deficiency, and applicants may receive an email requesting additional documents.

If you haven't received any deficiency request and the application is still within the applicable processing timeframe, waiting a little longer may be reasonable.
