Hi everyone,
I’m an OCI cardholder living in the UK and have both NRO and NRE accounts with an Indian bank. I recently received some rental income and have savings in my NRO account. I’m considering transferring some of the money to my NRE account, but I’m not sure about the rules.
I understand that NRE accounts are generally used for overseas earnings and offer repatriation benefits. My NRO account is used for income received in India.
Has anyone here transferred money from an NRO account to an NRE account? I want to understand whether this is allowed and what conditions apply.
I’m not planning to transfer the money immediately. I want to understand the applicable RBI rules and bank requirements first.
If anyone has experience with SBI, HDFC, ICICI, or other banks, please share how you handled the transfer.
I have an OCI card and maintain an NRO account in India. My understanding is that the bank needs to examine the source of funds before deciding how a transfer can be processed.
For example, rental income and proceeds from certain investments may have different documentation requirements.
If you're trying to move money to NRE for future overseas use, ask the bank whether it is treating the transaction as an eligible repatriation, a permitted transfer, or another type of account operation.
Also, don't rely only on the fact that both accounts are in your name. The account type and applicable FEMA rules still matter.
I would request written confirmation from the bank if the amount is significant. Requirements can change, and individual cases differ.
I looked into this when I wanted to move some money from my NRO account to my NRE account. The bank explained that NRO funds cannot always be transferred to NRE through a simple unrestricted transfer.
The source of the money matters. In my case, the bank wanted to understand whether the funds came from rental income, investments, or other sources.
I would suggest asking your bank specifically about NRO to NRE conversion rather than just asking whether an account-to-account transfer is available.
There can be differences between transferring eligible funds under repatriation rules and moving money that has already been converted into an NRE account.
I haven't personally completed a large transfer, so I wouldn't want to give you an incorrect answer about documentation. Check with your bank's NRI department before proceeding.

One thing to clarify is that NRO and NRE accounts have different purposes and repatriation conditions.
As far as I understand, funds in an NRO account may be repatriated subject to the applicable RBI conditions, including the prescribed limit and documentation. This does not automatically mean that the money can be deposited into an NRE account without meeting those conditions.
If the funds are from rental income, the bank may need information about the income and applicable tax compliance.
I would not assume that the process is the same as an NRE-to-NRO transfer. The direction of transfer matters.
You can check the RBI's official guidance on NRO account repatriation and ask your authorised dealer bank whether the proposed transaction is permitted.
