e-OCI Card for Minor After Foreign Passport Renewal

My 12-year-old daughter has had an OCI card for several years, and we recently renewed her Canadian passport because it was about to expire. Now I'm a little confused about what needs to be done with her e-OCI card after her foreign passport is renewed.

I've read the OCI Miscellaneous Services information, but there seems to be a lot of older advice online that talks about reissuing the OCI card, while newer guidance mentions simply updating the passport details online for applicants under 20. It's hard to tell which information is still current. Official OCI guidance says that OCI cardholders up to the age of 20 should upload their new passport and a recent photograph through OCI Miscellaneous Services whenever a new passport is issued, rather than obtaining a new OCI card in most cases.

Has anyone recently completed this process for a minor after renewing a foreign passport? Did you only update the passport details online, or were you asked to submit any physical documents through VFS?

I'd also like to know how long the online update took. We're planning a family trip to India in a few months, so I'd like to make sure everything is updated well before we travel. If anyone has gone through the e-OCI passport update for a child recently, I'd appreciate hearing your timeline and whether you ran into any issues.

We updated our son's passport details from the UK earlier this year.

One thing I'd recommend is completing the online update within the recommended timeframe after receiving the new passport. The current OCI guidance says passport updates should normally be uploaded within three months of receiving the new passport. If the update is made later than that, additional fees may apply depending on the circumstances.

The actual upload only took about 15 minutes. The waiting period afterward was much longer than the application itself, so don't worry if the status doesn't change immediately.

Our daughter's application in Australia was straightforward, but I almost applied for a full OCI reissue because I was following an old blog post.

After checking the latest OCI FAQ, I realized that children generally only need to upload the new passport details and a recent photo online after receiving a new foreign passport. We completed the update within a few days of receiving the passport.

The online status stayed "Under Review" for nearly a month before changing to completed. We weren't contacted for any additional documents.

We completed this for our 15-year-old son in the USA after he received his new U.S. passport.

We used the OCI Miscellaneous Services portal, uploaded the new passport information, his recent photograph, and submitted the online request. We didn't have to send his OCI card for re-issuance or visit VFS because it was just a passport particulars update. That's consistent with the current OCI FAQ for applicants under 20.

The update itself took around three weeks. We downloaded the acknowledgement after submitting it and kept a copy while travelling, although fortunately the update was completed before our trip.
