I’m a British citizen of Indian origin and submitted my first OCI application from the UK about seven weeks ago. I’m trying to understand whether my timeline is unusual or if other people have experienced similar OCI processing delays.
I completed the online OCI application and submitted the required documents, including my current British passport, naturalisation certificate, cancelled Indian passport and surrender certificate, address proof, photograph and signature. The application was accepted after document verification, and the online status has been showing “Application received and is under process” for several weeks.
I haven’t received an email asking for additional documents, but I’m starting to wonder whether something is holding up the application.
I’ve read that OCI applications can sometimes take around 30 days from acknowledgement, but I also see people saying their OCI cards took considerably longer. I’m particularly confused about what actually causes an OCI application to go beyond the normal processing period.
Could delays happen because of document verification, background checks, photograph or signature issues, or because the consulate is dealing with a high number of applications?
Also, if there is a problem with my documents, would the Indian Mission normally contact me by email? I don’t want to submit another application or make unnecessary changes while the first one is still under process.
Has anyone recently applied for OCI from the UK and experienced an OCI processing delay? How long did yours take after acknowledgement?
My timeline was different. I received a request for additional information because one of my supporting documents wasn't considered sufficient. That added some time because I had to provide the document and wait for the application to move forward again.
For anyone applying after becoming a foreign citizen, I'd pay particular attention to the citizenship and former Indian citizenship documents. The OCI document list includes the current passport, citizenship/naturalisation certificate where applicable, and cancelled/surrendered Indian passport with the surrender certificate for people who surrendered an Indian passport in or after 2010.
Another thing is that the application needs to match your current passport details. The OCI registration page specifically instructs applicants to enter details according to their current passport.
So I wouldn't change anything simply because the application is taking longer than expected. If the Mission needs something, check your email and the OCI status regularly.
Processing times can also vary between applicants and jurisdictions, so comparing your exact timeline with somebody else's isn't always useful.
I had a similar experience with my OCI application, although mine was from the US rather than the UK. Mine stayed under process for several weeks after the acknowledgement, and there was no obvious problem shown on the status page.
One thing I learned is that the application goes through document verification after submission. The official OCI guidance says that if there is a deficiency in the application, uploaded documents or photograph, the concerned Indian Mission/Post/FRRO can inform the applicant by email.
In my case, I had uploaded everything correctly as far as I could tell, so I just waited rather than submitting another application.
Photo specifications are worth checking carefully. The OCI portal specifically says that photographs not meeting its requirements can be rejected and may cause processing delays.
I wouldn't assume that “under process” automatically means something is wrong. There can be a difference between the published normal processing period and the actual time an individual application takes.

I think it's important to distinguish between a delay caused by a deficiency and an application simply taking longer during processing.
The official OCI FAQ says the normal time for issue of the OCI registration booklet is about 30 days from the date the application is acknowledged online. However, that's not necessarily a guarantee that every application will be completed within exactly 30 calendar days.
There can also be additional scrutiny in individual cases. Older MHA guidance states that applications can be subject to pre- or post-enquiry where adverse information is involved.
If you're already past the normal timeframe, I'd first check the OCI status using the official application-status facility and make sure the email address used for the application is being monitored.
I would also check whether your Mission has contacted you separately. Requirements and procedures can change, so the current instructions from the OCI portal and the relevant Indian Mission should take priority over experiences posted on forums.
