I’m a UK citizen of Indian origin and applied for my first OCI card through VFS. My application was initially accepted and I was able to track it through the OCI portal. After waiting several weeks, I received an email saying that additional documents/information are required.
The message itself wasn't very clear about what was missing. It referred me back to the application/document requirements, but I’m not sure whether they want a completely new document or just a clearer copy of something I already submitted.
For background, I became a British citizen several years ago. With my OCI application I submitted my current British passport, British citizenship/naturalisation certificate, old Indian passport, Indian passport surrender certificate, UK address proof, photograph and signature.
The part I'm worried about is the surrender documentation. My old Indian passport was surrendered after I became a British citizen, so I included the surrender certificate. I also uploaded copies of the old passport and my citizenship certificate.
The application status now indicates that additional documents are required, and I don't want to upload random documents that weren't requested.
Has anyone recently had an OCI application returned for additional documents?
What exactly did the Indian Mission or VFS ask you to submit? Did your application go back into processing quickly after you uploaded the requested document?
Also, does receiving an additional-document request mean the OCI application has been rejected, or is it simply a deficiency that needs to be corrected?
I'm particularly interested in experiences from UK applicants, but experiences from the US or Canada would also be helpful.
My experience was slightly different. They asked me for proof relating to my former Indian citizenship because the information in my application didn't completely match the document I had uploaded.
I submitted the additional document through the method they specified and kept a copy of everything.
For former Indian citizens, I'd pay close attention to the relationship between the current foreign passport, citizenship certificate, old Indian passport and surrender certificate. The OCI document guidance specifically refers to the surrender certificate and cancelled Indian passport for applicants who surrendered Indian citizenship/passports after acquiring foreign citizenship.
One mistake I'd avoid is uploading something simply because another person on a forum said it worked for them. Requirements can vary according to the applicant's circumstances and the Mission handling the application.
In my case, once I submitted the requested document, I didn't receive another acknowledgement immediately. The application eventually moved forward.
So I'd follow the exact instruction attached to your application and keep screenshots/receipts showing what you submitted.
I had an additional-document request on my OCI application from the US. In my case, it wasn't a rejection.
The Mission wanted a clearer copy of one of my supporting documents because the uploaded scan wasn't considered sufficient. I submitted exactly what they requested rather than adding a bunch of unrelated documents.
The OCI FAQ says that if there is a deficiency in the application, documents or photograph, the concerned Indian Mission/Post/FRRO can inform the applicant by email.
So I would first look carefully at the actual deficiency message. Mine had a specific instruction that I initially overlooked.
After submitting the requested document, my status didn't change immediately. It took several working days before I saw movement again.
I wouldn't assume the application has been rejected just because additional documents were requested. A deficiency request and a rejection are different things.
Also, if the request isn't clear, I would contact the Mission or VFS using the official contact method rather than guessing what they want.

I had a photograph issue rather than a citizenship-document issue.
My OCI application was returned because the photograph didn't meet the required specifications. I had assumed that because the photo looked fine on my passport application, it would automatically be acceptable for OCI.
The OCI portal specifically says that photographs not meeting the prescribed requirements may be rejected and can result in processing delays.
After I uploaded a replacement according to the OCI specifications, the application continued processing.
The main thing I'd suggest is not to panic or treat the additional-document request as a final refusal. Read the deficiency message carefully and respond with the exact document or correction requested.
If the message is vague, ask the relevant Mission/VFS centre for clarification rather than making assumptions.
And don't post your passport number, OCI application ID, date of birth or other personal information on a public forum when asking for help.
