I applied for my OCI card through VFS in the USA and initially thought everything was complete. About three weeks after submission, I received an email asking me to provide an additional document.
I sent the requested document within the timeframe mentioned in the email and received confirmation that it had been received. However, my OCI application status hasn't changed yet.
I'm wondering whether an additional document request effectively pauses the OCI processing or whether the original processing timeline continues from the date I submitted the application.
Has anyone had an OCI application where the Consulate requested additional documents? How much longer did yours take after you submitted the missing document?
Also, did your VFS status change immediately after the document was received, or did you have to wait several days before seeing an update?
I'm mainly trying to understand whether this kind of OCI document request commonly adds extra processing time or if I should be concerned about the delay.
I had a similar experience, but my status changed a few days after I sent the requested document.
In my case, the additional document wasn't something I had originally expected to provide. Once the Consulate asked for it, I submitted exactly what they requested rather than sending extra documents that weren't mentioned.
I think the delay after an additional document request depends on what stage the application was at when the request was made. The Consulate may need to review the new document before continuing the application.
VFS also isn't necessarily responsible for the actual OCI processing. Their role includes receiving and forwarding applications, while the Consulate handles the government-side processing.
I'd keep the courier tracking, email requesting the document, and proof of delivery. Those records are useful if you eventually need to make an enquiry.
Yes, an additional document request can add time in practice. I had this happen with my OCI application, although my situation may not be exactly the same as yours.
VFS informed me that my application needed another document, and I sent it back as instructed. The status didn't update immediately. According to the VFS USA FAQ, it can take 8–10 working days for the status to update to “Complete” after pending documents are received.
So I wouldn't assume that no immediate status change means the document wasn't received.
The important thing is to make sure the document was submitted according to the instructions and within the specified period. VFS currently states that additional documents requested by an Indian Embassy or Consulate should be submitted within 7 calendar days; otherwise, processing may be stopped.
Individual applications can still take different amounts of time after that.

One thing I'd check is whether the document was actually marked as received in the VFS system.
There can be a gap between delivery of the package and the status being updated. VFS specifically says that applicants should allow time for the system to update after pending documents are received.
Also check whether the email from VFS or the Consulate gave you a specific deadline. The current VFS USA information says additional documents requested by the Embassy or Consulate should be provided within 7 calendar days. If they aren't provided within that period, processing may be stopped.
If you've already submitted everything requested, I'd monitor the status and email rather than sending unrelated documents. If the application remains unchanged beyond the relevant timeframe, check the latest instructions from your VFS centre or Indian Consulate.
