I’m looking for recent experiences from adults who had to update or reissue their OCI after getting a new passport.
I’m a British citizen of Indian origin and received my OCI card several years ago. I recently renewed my British passport, and I’m now trying to understand whether I need to apply for OCI re-issuance because I’m over 20.
The terminology has been confusing. Most websites call it “OCI renewal,” but the official OCI portal refers to this under OCI Miscellaneous Services. The current official FAQ specifically says that an OCI cardholder has to get the OCI card re-issued once when a new passport is issued after completing 20 years of age. It also lists a copy of the OCI card, new passport and old passport among the documents for re-issuance.
My situation is fairly simple:
I’m mainly trying to find out what the process is actually like in practice.
For anyone who has done an OCI reissue after age 20 recently:
I’d particularly appreciate experiences from people who applied recently rather than older posts, since OCI procedures seem to have changed over time.
My experience was pretty straightforward, although my jurisdiction had its own submission procedure.
I think the most important point is that being over 20 doesn't mean you have to submit a completely new OCI application. You're already an OCI cardholder, so this falls under OCI Miscellaneous Services.
The official FAQ says the service can be used for re-issuance after a new passport, and that the application is submitted online with the required documents, photograph and signature. After that, the applicant is required to bring the original supporting documents for verification.
I also noticed that the official OCI site says the grant or otherwise of re-issuance is ordinarily decided within one month from the date the application is acknowledged by the Indian Mission/Post/FRRO.
That's different from counting from the day you start the online application or the day you submit documents to an outsourcing center.
Mine stayed fairly quiet in the tracking system for most of the process. I wouldn't interpret a lack of frequent status updates as a problem.
Also, keep your old passport. Even if you don't need the physical document later, the copy can be useful for the application and your records.
I went through this after getting my new U.S. passport, and the first thing I learned was that “OCI renewal” isn't really the official terminology for this situation.
The OCI portal treats it as a Miscellaneous Service/re-issuance issue. The current FAQ specifically says an OCI cardholder must get the OCI card re-issued once when a new passport is issued after completing 20 years of age.
For my application, I had scans of:
I also kept the originals with me because the official process says applicants must bring the originals of supporting documents to the relevant Indian Mission/Post/FRRO for prior verification after submitting the online application.
The fee was another thing I checked carefully. The current OCI FAQ lists US$25 or equivalent for re-issuance when a new passport is issued after age 20.
My advice would be to follow the current instructions for your particular Indian Mission rather than relying on a checklist from an older forum post. The process has changed over the years, especially with online services.

One thing I'd be careful about is assuming that every adult passport renewal requires exactly the same OCI action.
The official FAQ distinguishes the new passport after age 20 situation from passport updates for people up to age 20 and certain other categories. For an OCI cardholder, the card is required to be re-issued once when a new passport is issued after age 20.
There are also different rules for foreign-origin spouses of Indian citizens or OCI cardholders, so their experience may not be directly comparable.
For a straightforward adult case, I'd prepare the OCI card, new passport and old passport, and check the latest instructions for your Indian Mission.
One newer thing I noticed is the e-OCI system. The Ministry of Home Affairs now provides a downloadable electronic version of the OCI card. However, the e-OCI FAQ says that if passport particulars need to be updated under the applicable guidelines, the prescribed update process must be completed before the e-OCI reflects those updated particulars.
So I wouldn't assume that simply downloading an e-OCI automatically updates the passport information.
