How to Prepare for Immigration Interviews at the Airport?

One thing I'd add is that an immigration interview isn't something you can really "prepare answers" for like a job interview.

The immigration officer can ask for information relevant to your entry. Under India's current Immigration and Foreigners Rules, a foreigner arriving in India is required to produce the passport or other travel document and the applicable visa, OCI Card or Electronic Travel Authorisation for verification. When required, the traveller may also need to provide the address or intended address in India, purpose of visit, proposed length of stay or other relevant information. Biometric information may also be required.

So I'd prepare the documents rather than rehearsing a script.

For tourism, I'd have my passport, valid visa/ETA, e-Arrival details, accommodation information, return/onward ticket and basic itinerary available. If you're staying with relatives, keep their address and contact information handy.

If an officer asks something you don't understand, it's better to politely ask them to repeat the question than to guess.

My experience was slightly different because I was travelling with my family and staying with relatives rather than in a hotel.

The immigration officer asked us where we would be staying, how long we planned to remain in India and the reason for the visit. Nothing unusual was asked, but we had the Indian address and contact number readily available.

I think the biggest thing is consistency. If your visa says tourism but you're describing a completely different purpose at immigration, that could create questions. The same applies to your accommodation and intended length of stay.

I also completed the e-Arrival Card before my trip. The official portal describes it as an arrival-information form, not a visa. It asks for details such as passport information, arrival date, countries visited recently, address in India and contact details.

I'd keep the confirmation accessible, but I wouldn't assume that completing the e-Arrival Card replaces your visa or other travel documents.

I travelled to India recently on a foreign passport with an e-Visa. My immigration interaction was much shorter than I expected.

The officer mainly checked my passport and visa and asked where I was staying and the purpose of my trip. I answered directly and didn't try to give a long explanation. My return ticket and hotel booking were available on my phone, although the officer didn't ask me to show them.

I'd still recommend carrying copies of important travel documents. Phones can run out of battery or have poor connectivity at inconvenient times, so I keep my passport, visa/ETA and accommodation details accessible offline.

For an e-Visa, the official Indian Visa Online website says travellers should carry a copy of the Electronic Travel Authorization and present it at the immigration checkpoint. The government website also says biometric details may be captured at immigration on arrival.

I wouldn't try to memorize answers for the interview. Just make sure your answers match your actual travel plans and the information in your documents.

Here are some of the common questions that an immigration officer can ask you during your interview, like what is the purpose of the visit, duration of stay, where are you going to stay, about the flight tickets, about your funds, what do you do for a living, are you traveling alone or with family and friends, do you have an valid travel insurance, all these question you can prepare for having a smooth immigration interview.
