Name Correction on OCI Card Through Miscellaneous Services

One thing that confused me initially was the difference between updating information online and actually getting the OCI document reissued.

For a change in personal particulars such as name, the OCI Miscellaneous Services process is the relevant route. The current OCI FAQ says that applicants submit the application online, upload the required documents, photograph and signature, and then take the original supporting documents to the concerned Indian Mission/Post/FRRO for prior verification. It also says applicants don't need to bring printed copies of the online application or photocopies of documents that were uploaded.

I would keep copies of everything you upload, though, simply for your own records.

Also don't confuse this with an ordinary passport update. A name correction on the OCI record is a separate OCI Miscellaneous Service.

The official guidance says that OCI Miscellaneous Services for updating details are provided without a fee, although other types of reissuance can have fees.

For your case, I'd make sure the application clearly explains why the OCI has the abbreviated name and why the full name on the British passport is the correct one. That should make the supporting-document situation easier for the reviewing officer to understand.

I would check whether this is actually a name correction or a legal name change before submitting anything.

My OCI had an incorrect personal detail because of an error in the original application. That was relatively straightforward because my passport and other documents already showed the same correct information.

Your situation sounds slightly different because the OCI says “Rahul A Mehta” while the passport says “Rahul Arjun Mehta.” If the full name has always been your legal name and the OCI application simply omitted the middle name, you should explain that clearly in the application.

If you legally changed your name after the OCI was issued, that is a different situation and you would normally need documentation supporting that legal change.

Also, make sure you enter the information according to your current passport when completing the online application. The OCI portal itself instructs applicants to enter details as per the current passport.

I wouldn't rely on somebody else's exact document list because supporting evidence can depend on the reason for the correction. The official OCI FAQ says relevant documents and sufficient proof for changes such as name are required.

If you're unsure whether your particular documents establish the name correction, I'd verify with the Indian Mission handling your application before submitting.
