I’m trying to understand whether my OCI application delay is normal or if I should follow up with the Indian Consulate.
I’m a U.S. citizen and recently applied for an OCI card from the USA based on my Indian-origin background. I submitted my application through the OCI process for my jurisdiction and completed the required document submission. My application was acknowledged, but the status has been showing as “Under Process” for quite a while.
I was expecting the OCI card to be issued sooner because I had read that OCI applications normally take around a month after acknowledgment. The official OCI FAQ also mentions that the normal time for issuing an OCI registration booklet is about 30 days from the date of acknowledgment, although I understand that individual applications can take longer.
What is confusing me is that I haven’t received any request for additional documents or clarification. The OCI status page also doesn’t really explain what is happening internally. I have checked the application details several times to make sure I didn’t miss an email.
For people who recently applied for an OCI card in the USA:
I’m not necessarily expecting an exact processing time because I know cases can differ. I’m mainly trying to figure out whether a long OCI processing delay in the USA is something others have experienced or whether I should be concerned about my application.
I had a very similar experience with my OCI application in the U.S. My status stayed “Under Process” for several weeks and there wasn’t much information available beyond the online status.
What helped me was not assuming that “Under Process” meant there was a problem. In my case, there was no document deficiency notice. Eventually the application moved forward and the OCI was issued.
One thing I would recommend is checking the official OCI status page using both your application number and passport details rather than relying only on the VFS tracking page. The government OCI portal has a dedicated application-status facility.
I also kept copies of my acknowledgment, passport, submitted documents and payment receipt in case I needed to contact the mission.
I wouldn’t compare your timeline too closely with someone else's, though. Two applications submitted around the same time can apparently move differently depending on the circumstances.
If your application has been beyond the normal timeframe mentioned by OCI and there has been no movement or communication, I’d consider contacting the relevant Indian Mission/Consulate or checking whether VFS has any update for your jurisdiction.
Mine was different. I received updates relatively quickly, so I initially thought everyone’s OCI application would follow roughly the same timeline.
Later, a family member applied from another U.S. jurisdiction and their application took considerably longer. The biggest difference was that their case involved additional document verification, so I don’t think it is useful to compare applications only by submission date.
Also, make sure you distinguish between application submission, acknowledgment and actual processing. The OCI FAQ specifically refers to the normal processing period from the date the application is acknowledged on the online system.
If you are already past that period, I would keep checking the official OCI status rather than submitting another application. The official portal says the status can be checked online with the application ID and passport number.
I would also check your email and spam folder. If the mission requests clarification or additional documents, missing that message could create another delay.
Requirements and processing practices can change, and the relevant Indian Mission can ask for additional documents depending on the application.

One thing I learned during my OCI process is that the online status isn't always very detailed. I was expecting something like a parcel-tracking system where every stage would be clearly explained, but that wasn't my experience.
Before contacting anyone, I would make a small checklist:
I wouldn't immediately assume that a long “Under Process” status means rejection. There are several stages between submission and final issuance, and the applicant may not see all of them online.
For reference, the official OCI guidance currently says a normal OCI registration booklet issuance timeframe is about 30 days from acknowledgment, but that should not be interpreted as a guarantee for every application.
