I’m trying to figure out how long I should realistically expect to wait for my OCI after getting the acknowledgment in 2026.
I’m a U.S. citizen of Indian origin and submitted a fresh OCI application in the USA. My documents were submitted through VFS and the application was eventually acknowledged on the OCI portal. The status now says “Application received and is under process.”
I’m confused about the timeline because the official OCI FAQ says the normal time for issuing the OCI registration booklet is about 30 days from the date of acknowledgment. However, I’ve also seen Indian Consulates in the USA publish their own processing estimates. For example, the Consulate General of India in Atlanta currently says a new OCI application normally takes 5–6 weeks from the date the application is registered at the Consulate, subject to the required clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
So which date should applicants actually use when calculating the OCI processing time?
For those who received an OCI acknowledgment recently:
I’m not expecting an exact guarantee because I understand processing can vary. I’m mainly looking for recent experiences so I know whether my application is still within a normal range.
I think there is some confusion online because people use “submitted,” “acknowledged,” and “registered at the Consulate” as though they mean the same thing.
They don't necessarily represent the same stage.
In my case, I first submitted the documents to the outsourcing center, then waited for the application to be processed and acknowledged. I started counting the official OCI processing period from the acknowledgment rather than from the day I mailed the documents.
The OCI portal says applications are acknowledged after the Indian Mission/Post verifies the documents and confirms that the application and supporting documents are in order.
So if somebody says, “My OCI took 45 days,” I'd want to know whether they mean 45 days from mailing the application or 45 days from acknowledgment.
Also, don't assume that “Under Process” means something is wrong. Mine stayed that way for a substantial part of the process.
If you have urgent travel coming up, I wouldn't rely on an estimated OCI completion date. The OCI process does not have an expedited service, and some official missions advise applicants to make travel arrangements only after the OCI has actually been issued.
I went through this recently and the status was basically unchanged for most of the waiting period. That was probably the most frustrating part because I kept checking the OCI portal expecting to see a new update.
The important thing I found was that acknowledgment isn't the same thing as final approval or issuance. The central OCI FAQ specifically says the normal time is about 30 days from acknowledgment, but that is a general timeframe.
I wouldn't start worrying the moment 30 calendar days pass. Some U.S. Consulates publish longer local estimates. Atlanta, for example, currently lists 5–6 weeks from registration at the Consulate for a new OCI based on Indian origin.
My suggestion would be to keep checking the official OCI status and your email. If you applied through VFS, also keep the VFS reference handy.
I know people who received their cards relatively quickly and others who waited longer. I don't think one applicant's timeline is a reliable prediction for another person's case.

I had a slightly different experience because my application was handled by a different U.S. jurisdiction.
That's another reason I wouldn't use one Consulate's timeline as a universal USA timeline. For example, the Atlanta Consulate currently publishes 5–6 weeks for a new OCI application from registration at the Consulate, while the central OCI FAQ says approximately 30 days from acknowledgment.
Those aren't necessarily contradictory. The Consulate's local estimate can reflect the additional processing stages involved in that jurisdiction.
I'd keep these dates written down:
VFS submission → Consulate registration/acknowledgment → OCI processing → OCI issued → dispatch
That makes it much easier to understand where the waiting period actually occurred.
If your status is still under process and you haven't received a document request, I'd first continue monitoring the official status. If the application goes substantially beyond the applicable published timeframe, then contacting the relevant Consulate or VFS channel with your application details would be reasonable.
Requirements and processing practices can change, so I'd verify the current instructions rather than relying entirely on forum timelines.
