I’m trying to compare OCI processing times in the USA vs Canada because my family is split between the two countries and we’re getting very different information from people who have applied recently.
I’m a U.S. citizen living in California and submitted my OCI application through the Indian Mission responsible for my jurisdiction. My application was acknowledged, but it has been sitting under process for several weeks.
My sister is a Canadian citizen living in Ontario and recently applied for her OCI through the Indian Consulate in Toronto. Her experience seems different, although I’m not sure whether it’s because of the processing location or simply because every application is different.
I’ve seen the general OCI guidance saying that registration normally takes about 30 days from the date of acknowledgment. However, the Toronto Consulate’s current FAQ says the normal processing time for new and miscellaneous OCI applications is at least 8 weeks after acknowledgment at the Consulate.
So I’m wondering how people are actually experiencing this in 2026.
For anyone who has applied for an OCI card in the USA or Canada recently:
I realize the official timelines and actual processing times aren't necessarily the same thing. I’m just trying to plan travel to India and decide how much time I should realistically allow.
I'm in Canada and applied through the Toronto jurisdiction. The information I found was actually different from the general 30-day statement.
The Toronto Consulate's Sampark FAQ currently says the normal processing time for a new or miscellaneous OCI application is at least 8 weeks after it is acknowledged at the Consulate.
That's why I think comparing “USA vs Canada” as if there is one fixed processing time for each country can be confusing.
There is also a practical difference in how applications are submitted. Toronto announced that from April 5, 2026, OCI applications in Canada must be submitted in person at BLS Centres because biometrics have to be provided; postal OCI applications are not accepted.
So when someone says their Canadian OCI took 10 weeks, you also need to know when the application was actually acknowledged by the Consulate.
I'd use the official country/jurisdiction information as the baseline and treat Reddit/forum timelines as personal experiences rather than guaranteed processing times.
I applied from the USA, so I can only speak from my own experience. Mine did not finish exactly according to the timeframe I was expecting either.
The important thing is that I started counting from the acknowledgment date, not from the date I first submitted the online application. The OCI FAQ says the normal time for issuing the OCI registration booklet is about 30 days from acknowledgment.
My application stayed under process for quite a while, and the status page didn't give me much detail about what was happening in the background. I kept checking the official OCI portal rather than assuming that no status change meant there was a problem.
I wouldn't say USA is always faster than Canada based on one or two cases. There are too many variables involved, including the jurisdiction, document verification and the particular application.
If you're comparing timelines, I'd make sure you're comparing acknowledgment-to-issuance, not online submission-to-delivery. Otherwise the numbers can be misleading.
Also, I wouldn't book non-refundable travel based solely on somebody else's OCI timeline.

I think the biggest mistake is treating the OCI portal's general 30-day information as a promise that every applicant worldwide will receive the card in 30 days.
The official OCI FAQ says about 30 days from acknowledgment under the normal process. But the Toronto Consulate has a more specific local FAQ saying at least 8 weeks after acknowledgment.
That tells me applicants should check the instructions from the Indian Mission handling their particular application rather than relying on somebody else's timeline.
Also, don't confuse VFS/BLS tracking with the OCI government's status. The official OCI status page allows applicants to check an application using the application ID and passport number.
If the application is still within the applicable processing timeframe, there may not be much to do other than monitor the status and email. If it has gone substantially beyond the stated timeframe, contacting the relevant Indian Mission or processing center would make more sense.
