I'm an OCI cardholder living in California, USA, and recently came across news about the new e-OCI Card. I received my physical OCI booklet several years ago after becoming a U.S. citizen, and I've been using it without any issues whenever I travel to India.
I noticed that existing OCI holders can now generate a digital version of their OCI card, but I'm a bit confused about how it works. Do I need to submit a fresh application, or is it simply available for download through the OCI portal? I also read that physical OCI booklets are still valid, which made me wonder whether downloading the e-OCI Card is optional or something everyone should do.
Another question I have is whether anyone has actually travelled to India using only the e-OCI Card. Were airlines familiar with it? Did immigration officers accept it without any issues?
I haven't renewed my passport recently, so there haven't been any changes to my OCI details. I just want to avoid any surprises before my trip later this year.
If you've already generated your e-OCI Card, I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience. How long did the generation process take? Did you need to update your registered email first, or was everything already linked?
My experience was slightly different in the UK.
The generation itself was easy, but I had forgotten my OCI portal password because I hadn't logged in for years. After resetting it, I could see my previous OCI application and generate the e-OCI Card without uploading any documents.
I haven't travelled yet, but from what I've read, the digital e-OCI Card is intended to be presented along with your valid foreign passport. Existing physical OCI cards also continue to remain valid, so there wasn't any pressure to replace my booklet.
I generated mine last week from Canada. In my case, I didn't have to submit a new OCI application at all. I simply logged into the OCI Services Portal using my existing account, selected the e-OCI option, and clicked "Generate." It became available for download shortly afterwards.
The only issue I had was that my old OCI account wasn't linked to my current email address, so I first completed the email update process. After that everything worked normally.
I'm still keeping my physical OCI booklet at home even though I now have the digital version on my phone. Requirements can change, so I prefer having both available when travelling.

I recently travelled from Australia to India after downloading my e-OCI Card.
The airline staff were familiar with it, although they spent an extra minute verifying the document. Immigration in India was straightforward, and I presented my passport together with the digital e-OCI Card stored on my phone.
That said, everyone's experience may differ depending on the airline and airport. I still carried a copy of my old OCI booklet in my luggage just in case.
Based on my experience, the digital version is definitely more convenient, but it's always worth checking the latest official guidance before travelling.
