Hi everyone,
I'm based in New Jersey, USA, and have been trying to submit a new OCI application through the recently introduced e-OCI registration portal. For the last four days, I've been unable to complete the registration process.
Sometimes the portal loads normally, but after entering my details and captcha, it either freezes or redirects back to the login page. On a few attempts, I received a generic error message without any explanation. I also tried different browsers (Chrome, Edge, and Safari), cleared cookies, and used incognito mode, but the issue continues.
I noticed that India recently moved OCI services to a more digital e-OCI system, so I'm wondering whether there are still technical issues being worked out. Several people on other forums seem to be reporting "Record Not Found" errors and login problems as well.
Has anyone successfully completed an e-OCI application recently?
If you faced portal issues:
I don't want to keep submitting the same information repeatedly if the issue is on the portal side.
Any recent experiences would be appreciated.
I applied from Canada earlier this year and experienced random logout issues. The portal would automatically sign me out after being inactive for a while, especially while I was preparing documents for upload.
After that happened once, I started saving every page before moving to the next step. I also resized my PDF files because one document was much larger than the recommended limit. The next attempt went much more smoothly.
In my case, I didn't need to contact the Consulate because the problem resolved itself after a day or two. Technical issues seem to come and go, so patience sometimes helps.
I had almost the same issue while applying from the UK a few months ago. The portal kept freezing whenever I reached the document upload section. I thought it was my internet connection at first, but it turned out several people in an online community were reporting similar problems around the same time.
What eventually worked for me was waiting until the next day and signing back in using my temporary application number. My saved information was still there, so I didn't have to start over.
I also made sure all my document files were within the size limits and had simple file names without special characters. I'm not sure if that made a difference, but after that the uploads completed successfully.
I don't think you're the only one.
The new e-OCI system became part of India's 2026 OCI digitization initiative, and while the portal is live, some users have reported login, registration, and record lookup issues during the rollout period.
Before assuming it's a permanent problem, I'd suggest:
I've seen government portals behave unpredictably during major upgrades, especially shortly after new systems are launched.
I'm in the UK and experienced the "Record Not Found" error while trying to update passport details on an existing OCI record.
I contacted VFS and they told me the application center couldn't correct portal database issues. They suggested reaching out to the OCI helpdesk. That was frustrating because the application couldn't even be started. Similar complaints have appeared from other OCI applicants recently.
After several days, the portal finally recognized my details and allowed me to proceed.
My advice would be to take screenshots of every error message and keep a record of the date and time. If you eventually need support, that information may help explain the issue.

I wouldn't worry too much unless the problem continues for several days. Government application portals occasionally undergo maintenance or experience heavy traffic, especially around weekends or holidays.
One suggestion is to note the exact error message or take screenshots if the issue keeps happening. If you eventually need to contact the Consulate or VFS, having those details can make it easier to explain what you've already tried.
Also, double-check that your browser isn't blocking pop-ups or downloads related to the application. It wasn't the cause in my case, but it's another thing worth ruling out.
Remember that portal behavior can change over time, so if the issue persists, it's best to verify whether any official maintenance notices have been posted.
