e-OCI Card Application USA – How Long Did the Process Take?

Hello everyone,

I recently applied for an e-OCI Card in the USA after becoming a U.S. citizen and surrendering my Indian passport. I submitted my application through VFS San Francisco on May 8 and received an acknowledgment from the Consulate a few weeks later.

So far, my OCI status shows "Under Process," and I haven't received any additional updates. I understand that OCI processing times can vary, but I'm curious to know what timelines others have experienced recently.

For my application, I submitted:

  • U.S. Passport
  • Surrender Certificate
  • Copy of my last Indian Passport
  • Naturalization Certificate
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Signed OCI application form

I'm planning a family trip to India later this year, so I'm trying to get a realistic idea of current OCI processing times in the USA.

For those who recently completed an OCI application through VFS New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, or Washington DC:

  • How long did it take from acknowledgment to OCI approval?
  • How long after OCI printing did you receive the card?
  • Did the Consulate request any additional documents?
  • Was the OCI status tracker accurate?

I know every case is different, but hearing recent experiences would be very helpful.

I recently completed an OCI application through VFS Chicago.

My acknowledgment arrived about 10 days after submission. After that, there were no updates for almost seven weeks. I assumed something was wrong, but then several status updates appeared within a few days.

    The tracker changed from:

    • Under Process
    • Documents Printing Status Processed
    • Dispatched From MEA
    • Received At Consulate

After that, VFS sent the OCI card by courier.

My overall timeline was about 8 weeks from acknowledgment to delivery. I found the status tracker useful, but it didn't update frequently during the middle stages.

My experience through VFS Houston was a little slower.

I submitted my OCI application in January and received acknowledgment about two weeks later. The application remained under process for nearly three months.

The Consulate contacted me requesting a clearer copy of my Naturalization Certificate because one section wasn't fully visible in the uploaded document. After I submitted the requested copy, processing continued normally.

The total timeline ended up being around 12 weeks.

If your documents were accepted without any follow-up requests, that's generally a good sign, although processing times can vary throughout the year.

I applied through VFS New York earlier this year after becoming a U.S. citizen.

My application timeline looked like this:

    • Application submitted: February 10
    • Acknowledgment received: February 24
    • OCI status changed to "Processed": April 18
    • OCI card received: April 28

So it was roughly 9 to 10 weeks from acknowledgment to receiving the card.

In my case, there were no document requests. The OCI status tracker stayed on "Under Process" for several weeks and then updated suddenly. I checked almost daily because I was traveling to India in June.

Based on my experience, long periods without updates are fairly common.
