e-OCI Card Application USA – How Long Did the Process Take?

I applied through VFS San Francisco in early July and my experience was fairly smooth. My application stayed on "Under Process" for almost three weeks without any visible updates, so don't worry if nothing changes for a while.

My timeline looked like this:

• July 2 – Documents received by VFS
• July 5 – Forwarded to the Consulate
• July 24 – Status changed to Granted
• July 25 – e-OCI available for download

So it took just under four weeks in total.

One thing I learned is that the online status doesn't always update frequently. Mine appeared stuck until the approval came through. Since the introduction of e-OCI, some applicants have reported faster processing, but I wouldn't rely on that for travel planning.

One thing I'd recommend is checking whether your registered email address on the OCI portal is correct. Some people expected an email when the application was approved but noticed the update first by checking the OCI portal directly.

Also remember that the recent rollout of the digital e-OCI changed how the final document is issued, but the background verification process is still handled through the usual channels. From what I've seen, the verification stage is still the part that takes the longest.

If your application is complete and you haven't received any document deficiency notice, that's generally a positive sign, although every application is unique.

Mine took longer through the New York jurisdiction.

I submitted everything in mid-May and finally received approval a little over six weeks later. The delay wasn't because of missing documents—I never received any additional document requests. It simply remained "Under Process" almost the entire time.

A friend who applied around the same period through Atlanta received approval in about five weeks, so the processing speed seems to vary by jurisdiction and workload.

Based on my experience, I wouldn't make non-refundable travel bookings until the e-OCI is actually issued. Requirements and timelines can change, and additional verification is sometimes requested.

I recently completed an OCI application through VFS Chicago.

My acknowledgment arrived about 10 days after submission. After that, there were no updates for almost seven weeks. I assumed something was wrong, but then several status updates appeared within a few days.

The tracker changed from:

• Under Process
• Documents Printing Status Processed
• Dispatched From MEA
• Received At Consulate

After that, VFS sent the OCI card by courier.

My overall timeline was about 8 weeks from acknowledgment to delivery. I found the status tracker useful, but it didn't update frequently during the middle stages.

My experience through VFS Houston was a little slower.

I submitted my OCI application in January and received acknowledgment about two weeks later. The application remained under process for nearly three months.

The Consulate contacted me requesting a clearer copy of my Naturalization Certificate because one section wasn't fully visible in the uploaded document. After I submitted the requested copy, processing continued normally.

The total timeline ended up being around 12 weeks.

If your documents were accepted without any follow-up requests, that's generally a good sign, although processing times can vary throughout the year.
