I am an OCI cardholder currently living in the USA and want to apply for an Indian PAN card. I recently opened an NRO account in India, and my bank has asked me to provide PAN details to complete some banking formalities.
I am confused about which PAN application form I should use because I am not an Indian citizen anymore. I originally held an Indian passport but acquired US citizenship several years ago and subsequently received my OCI card.
While researching the PAN application process, I came across information about Form 93 and Form 95. Some websites mention Form 49AA, but I understand that the PAN application forms have changed as of April 2026.
I do not want to select the wrong category and have my application rejected.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has applied for an Indian PAN card after acquiring foreign citizenship. It would be helpful to understand the correct application category and documents required under the new PAN application system.
I think the most important thing is not to follow older articles mentioning Form 49AA without checking the updated instructions.
The new PAN application forms became effective on April 1, 2026.
I am also an OCI cardholder and would use the foreign-citizen application category. Your US passport and OCI card are relevant supporting documents.
One more point: the official instructions list an OCI card as an acceptable document for identity, address and date-of-birth purposes, subject to the prescribed documentation requirements.
If you are applying from the USA, check whether your communication address is correctly entered as your overseas address and whether the required TIN details are included.
If you have acquired US citizenship and hold an OCI card, you should apply using Form 95, not Form 93.
I checked the updated PAN application categories because I was also confused about the difference.
The distinction is based on citizenship, not your Indian origin.
Your OCI status does not make you an Indian citizen. It gives you certain privileges under the OCI framework, but you remain a foreign citizen.
You should also check the Form 95 document checklist carefully. It asks for a Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individual non-citizens.

Yes, Form 95 is the correct category for an OCI cardholder who has acquired foreign citizenship.
I would suggest checking these things before submitting:
You can apply through Protean or UTIITSL. Both are authorised PAN service providers.
Also, if you already have a PAN allotted under your previous Indian citizenship, do not apply for another PAN. Check the correction or existing PAN procedure instead.
