I’m an Australian citizen of Indian origin and recently traveled to India using my newly activated e-OCI for the first time. I arrived at Delhi Airport earlier this month after flying from Melbourne. Before traveling, I made sure my passport details matched my OCI records and downloaded my e-OCI information.
At the immigration counter, the officer scanned my passport and then asked me to step aside for what they called an "additional verification." I wasn't taken to a separate room or anything serious, but another officer checked my details on their system for about 15–20 minutes before allowing me to enter India.
Nothing was explained beyond saying they wanted to verify my records. I wasn't asked for any extra documents apart from my Australian passport, and eventually everything was cleared without any issues.
This was my first trip using e-OCI, so I wasn't sure whether this kind of verification is common or whether something in my record triggered it. I had previously traveled on an OCI card without any problems before switching to the digital version.
Has anyone else experienced additional verification at immigration while traveling with an e-OCI? Did it happen only once, or has it occurred on multiple trips? I'm planning to travel back to India later this year and would like to know whether I should expect the same process again.
I understand every traveler's situation is different, and immigration officers can perform additional checks when necessary. I'm mainly looking to hear about other people's experiences.
Something similar happened to me at Bengaluru Airport earlier this year. I'm a British citizen, and it was my first trip after updating my OCI records. The immigration officer asked me to wait while they verified my details in their system.
The whole process took around 10 minutes. They didn't mention any problem with my application and simply said it was a routine verification. My passport was returned, and I entered India without any further questions.
I've traveled once more since then, and the second trip was much quicker. Based on my experience, it didn't become a recurring issue.
Of course, procedures can differ between airports and individual cases, so I wouldn't assume everyone's experience will be the same.
I had a different experience in Canada before flying to India. The airline staff spent more time checking my travel documents because they weren't immediately familiar with the e-OCI record. Once they confirmed everything, boarding wasn't an issue.
When I reached Mumbai, immigration clearance was fairly routine and only took a few minutes.
Sometimes the delay isn't at immigration itself but during airline document verification. I now keep printed copies of my OCI details and passport information with me, even though I haven't been asked to show them recently. It simply gives me peace of mind while traveling.

I don't think additional verification automatically means there's a problem. Immigration officers can carry out extra checks for many reasons, including first-time use of updated travel documents, system verification, or random screening.
When I entered through Chennai, another passenger using an OCI card was also asked to wait briefly while their information was verified. They were cleared shortly afterward.
If your entry was approved and no further action was requested, I probably wouldn't worry too much. For your next trip, I'd just make sure your passport and OCI information are still current and keep an eye on any official travel updates before departure because procedures can change over time.
