How Do I Check if My Passport is Blacklisted?

If you currently have a pending passport application, you can track that application through Passport Seva using the file number and date of birth. The official tracker doesn't appear to be a general "passport blacklist checker."

You can also contact the National Call Centre at 1800-258-1800. Passport Seva says applicants can ask about application status through the call centre and can also register a grievance.

If you're outside India, I'd contact your Indian Mission/Passport Office rather than assuming the passport is blacklisted.

Also, don't surrender, destroy, or otherwise dispose of the passport just because you're concerned about its status. Let the issuing authority confirm what the actual issue is.

One thing that helped me was looking at the exact terminology used by Passport Seva.

Passport Seva specifically lists applicants whose passport has ever been impounded or revoked as a "complex case." It also separately lists people who have ever been refused or denied a passport.

So I wouldn't use "blacklisted" as a catch-all term.

If you're concerned because of a previous criminal case, court order, deportation/repatriation or some other issue, mention the exact circumstances when contacting the Passport Office. Passport Seva also identifies pending criminal cases, warrants/summons and certain court orders as complex passport cases.

In my case, speaking to the passport authority was more useful than trying to interpret the status from online forums.

I don't think there is a public Passport Seva page where you simply enter your passport number and get a result saying "blacklisted" or "not blacklisted."

I wouldn't assume that an expired passport, an application delay, or a police verification issue automatically means the passport is blacklisted. Those are different situations.

I haven't dealt with a blacklisted passport personally, but my cousin had additional verification during his passport renewal in Australia because there was an old police case that had already been resolved.

The Consulate asked for a few extra documents before processing the application. It added a couple of weeks to the timeline, but the renewal eventually went through.

If you're worried because of an old lost passport report, I'd suggest contacting the Indian Embassy or Consulate before your appointment. They can usually tell you what documents, if any, you'll need to provide. Requirements can vary depending on the circumstances, so it's best to rely on their latest guidance.

My experience was a little different. I had previously reported my passport as lost while I was in India. After reporting it, I later found it, but the passport office advised me not to continue using the recovered passport because it had already been reported.

When I later applied for a new passport, the authorities reviewed the earlier report during the application process. Everything was resolved after I submitted the required documents and explanation.

From what I understand, if a passport has actually been cancelled or invalidated, the passport authorities are the ones who can confirm its status. I don't think VFS staff can independently verify whether a passport has been blacklisted since they mainly collect applications and supporting documents.
