Does Indian Passport Have Passport Book Number?

No Indian passport doesn't have a passport book number on the passport. However, you can find the passport book numbers in the US, Canada, but not on the Indian passport. The Indian passport only includes the following information, which are:

  • An 8-character passport number, which is printed on the front bio page.
  • A 12-character file number, which I printed on the last page of the Indian passport.

Check the bio-data/photo page of your Indian passport first. The passport number is clearly printed there.

If the form is asking for “passport book number” and doesn't explain what foreign passport holders should enter, I'd verify with the agency. Different online forms can use terminology designed around U.S. passports.

I think some of the confusion comes from U.S. passport terminology. Not every country uses the same passport-number system.

When I renewed my Indian passport, I mainly used the passport number exactly as printed on the bio-data page. For a form asking specifically for a book number, I'd check the instructions or contact the organization processing the form rather than guessing.

I had the same confusion when filling out a U.S. form. My Indian passport has a passport number, but I couldn't find a separate field called passport book number.

The passport number is the main identification number printed on the passport's details page. I wouldn't assume another number is the “book number” unless the specific application gives instructions for Indian passports.

I've renewed my Indian passport twice and have also applied for an OCI card. I haven't come across a separate passport book number on any of my Indian passports. The passport number on the identity page is the main identifier that's usually required for government and consular applications.

If you're filling out a foreign immigration or visa form that asks for a passport book number, don't assume it's the same as the passport number unless the instructions clearly say so. Requirements can vary depending on the country and the application system, so it's always best to verify with the official guidance before submitting your application.

I had the same question while applying for an overseas visa last year. From my experience, Indian passports don't include a separate passport book number. Some international application forms are designed for passports issued by multiple countries, so not every field applies to Indian passports.

In my case, I contacted the visa support team before submitting the form. They confirmed that I could either leave the passport book number field blank or follow their specific instructions. I'd recommend checking the instructions for the application you're completing because different countries handle this field differently.
