OCI Card Not Received Before Travel Date – What Are My Options?

I'd contact the Indian Mission/Post handling your application if the travel date is getting close.

In my case, the biggest mistake was waiting because I assumed the courier delivery would happen automatically once the status changed. It eventually arrived, but I had very little time left before travelling.

Before contacting them, I'd have these details ready:

• OCI application/reference number
• Current foreign passport number
• Date of application
• Date of acknowledgement
• Current OCI status
• Expected travel date
• Any courier/tracking reference you received

Also check the email account associated with the OCI application. The OCI portal specifically recommends using the registered email for OCI-related services, and the portal has contact information for the relevant Indian Mission/Post and OCI Cell.

I wouldn't rely on something another applicant says was accepted at an airport. Immigration requirements can change, and the circumstances of one traveller may not match yours.

If you need a visa as a backup, use the official Indian visa process rather than assuming the pending OCI application gives you entry rights.

I would be careful about the e-OCI point. The government has introduced an e-OCI card, but the current official FAQ describes it as a digital representation of the OCI card and specifically says it does not replace the physical OCI card. It can be downloaded through the OCI portal once it is available in your OCI record.

So I wouldn't assume that an e-OCI automatically solves a situation where your first OCI card hasn't actually been issued.

For travel, the Indian government's visa portal currently states that foreign nationals entering India need a valid passport together with a valid Indian visa or eVisa, unless an exemption applies. It also lists an OCI card/eOCI as one of the documents that can establish the relevant entry status.

That distinction is important.

If your OCI is still pending when you need to travel, I'd check whether you're eligible for an appropriate Indian visa based on your nationality and circumstances. Don't submit a visa application assuming it will automatically be approved just because your OCI is pending.

I'd also check the OCI status directly rather than relying only on courier tracking. The official status page asks for your application ID and passport number.
