OCI Reissuance After Acquiring New Foreign Passport

I’m a Canadian citizen and have been holding an OCI card for several years. I recently renewed my Canadian passport because the old one expired. My OCI card still has the old passport number, so I’m confused about whether I need a completely new OCI card or just need to update my passport details.

I’m currently living in Toronto and my existing OCI card was issued in Canada. The new passport has the same name, date of birth and other personal details as my old passport. The only major change is the passport number and validity dates.

I checked the OCI Miscellaneous Services section, but there seem to be different options for OCI reissuance, passport particulars update and uploading a new passport. I don't want to select the wrong service and create another delay.

My old passport is still with me, and I have a copy of it as well as a copy of my OCI card. I can also provide the new Canadian passport.

Has anyone recently gone through an OCI reissuance after getting a new foreign passport? Did you actually receive a new physical OCI card, or was the new passport information simply updated in the OCI records?

I’m also wondering whether the process is different depending on your age. I’m over 20, but my OCI card was originally issued when I was younger.

How soon after receiving a new foreign passport should the OCI passport details be updated? Is there a fee if I submit the update within three months?

I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently completed this process. I’m especially interested in what documents you uploaded and how long it took for the OCI record to show the new passport information.

One thing that caught me out was assuming that VFS would decide which OCI service I needed. They don't really replace the applicant's responsibility to select and complete the correct OCI application.

The current OCI portal instructions say applicants should enter details according to their current passport, and the OCI Miscellaneous Services process requires the supporting documents to be uploaded with the application.

For a straightforward new-passport situation, the government FAQ lists:

    • Existing OCI card
    • New foreign passport
    • Old passport, unless it wasn't returned by the authority that issued the new passport

That's the basic document list specifically given for reissuance following a new passport.

There is also an important distinction if the passport change involved something beyond the passport number—for example, a name, nationality or other personal-particular change. Those may require additional supporting documents.

So if your name and other personal details haven't changed, your case sounds more straightforward, but I'd still follow the current instructions for the specific OCI service and your jurisdiction.

Also, if you're applying from the United States, note that VFS has separate instructions for passport-particular updates. Its current August 2026 notice says certain updates submitted more than three months after the new passport was issued have an 8–12 week turnaround and a separate fee structure.

I had a different situation because I was already over 20 when I received my new U.S. passport.

In my case, I used OCI Miscellaneous Services rather than starting a fresh OCI application. The official OCI FAQ lists issuance of a new passport after completing 20 years of age as one of the circumstances covered by Miscellaneous Services. For this type of reissuance, the listed documents include the existing OCI card, new passport and old passport.

The fee listed by the Government of India for reissuance following a new passport issued after age 20 is US$25 or equivalent in local currency. The same FAQ says miscellaneous detail updates are generally gratis, while passport-detail updating after three months can attract a US$25 fee.

That's why I'd first determine which category applies to you rather than paying for something just because the passport number changed.

Also, don't throw away your old passport. Even though the new passport is the active travel document, the old passport can be relevant supporting documentation for the OCI process.

The official FAQ says the normal decision on OCI reissuance is ordinarily made within one month from acknowledgement of the application on the online system. That's a processing reference, not a guaranteed delivery date.

I went through something very similar after renewing my Australian passport. In my case, I initially thought “new passport = new OCI card,” but that isn't always how the OCI Miscellaneous Services process works.

The current Government of India OCI FAQ specifically distinguishes between reissuance and updating passport particulars. For an OCI holder who receives a new passport, the requirement depends partly on age. A new OCI card is required once when a new passport is issued after the holder has completed 20 years of age.

For certain other passport renewals, the OCI portal allows the holder to upload the new passport and latest photograph rather than applying for a full physical reissue. The government says these documents can generally be uploaded within three months of receiving the new passport, with the service provided on a gratis basis in the applicable cases.

I uploaded my new passport, old passport and OCI card information as required for my particular application. I would definitely check the current OCI Miscellaneous FAQ before selecting the service because the rules are not simply “renew your OCI every time your passport expires.”

The three-month timing also matters. If you wait beyond that period, the treatment and fee can be different.
