  • You can find your file number in an Indian passport on the last page of the passport at the bottom of the page.
  • You can also find your file number in an Indian passport on the application receipt, whether you have applied online or offline.
  • Log in to the official portal of the Passport Seva, and after login, go to the saved/submitted application, and see your file number in an Indian passport.

No, you cannot change your file number. If you have got your file number, then it is impossible to change, and you need to process through the same number for your application. However, if you want a new file number, then you will need to apply for an Indian passport application, for example, renewal or re-issue of a passport. In that condition, you can get a new file number.

A file number is a 15-character code at the time of applying for an Indian passport. This code is used as a reference number to continue filling out your application in the future. This code helps you track the status of your Indian passport application. If you don’t have a file number for the Indian passport, then you cannot proceed with your application.

Through the file number, I have checked my Indian passport status by going to the website of the Passport Seva Portal.

      1. Clicked on the Track application status
      2. Selected my application type.
      3. Entered file number and date of birth.
      4. Then clicked on the view button to see the current real-time status of my passport application.

A file number includes information like city and state codes, the year of application submitted, and a unique application digit, which makes your application unique from other applicants.
