I'm a recently naturalized U.S. citizen living in Seattle and planning to apply for an OCI card through the new e-OCI system. Before starting the application, I'm trying to understand exactly which documents are required because I've seen different checklists mentioned online.
I was born in India and became a U.S. citizen earlier this year. I have already received my surrender certificate and now want to begin the e-OCI application process. My concern is making sure I upload the correct documents the first time to avoid delays or requests for additional information.
For those who have recently completed an e-OCI application, what documents did you submit?
Specifically, I'd like to know:
I'm also interested in hearing from applicants in Canada, the UK, and Australia since requirements sometimes seem to vary slightly depending on the jurisdiction.
Any recent experiences would be very helpful.
I applied from Toronto, Canada, shortly after the e-OCI system became available.
My document list was very similar:
The online system accepted digital copies initially. Later, during document verification, I was asked to provide a clearer scan of my citizenship certificate because part of the seal was difficult to read.
Based on my experience, the quality of uploaded files matters almost as much as the documents themselves.
I completed my e-OCI application from California about two months ago.
For my application, I uploaded:
The surrender certificate was definitely required because it established that I had formally renounced Indian citizenship.
After submission, no additional documents were requested. However, I made sure all scans were clear and uploaded exactly as specified in the document guidelines.
One suggestion: double-check that names match across all documents. Even minor differences can sometimes trigger additional verification.

I recently completed an OCI application in the UK after becoming a British citizen.
The core documents requested were proof of current foreign citizenship, evidence of previous Indian citizenship, surrender documentation, photographs, and address proof.
For applicants applying based on Indian-origin ancestry rather than previous Indian citizenship, the document requirements can be different. Some friends applying through parents or grandparents had to provide additional relationship documents such as birth certificates and marriage certificates.
That's why I always recommend checking the category-specific OCI checklist rather than relying on a generic list.
