I'm an existing OCI cardholder living in the USA, and I'm trying to understand how the new e-OCI card migration works.
I've had my physical OCI card for several years, and it's still valid. Recently, I've been reading about India's new e-OCI system, but I'm finding different explanations about whether existing OCI holders are automatically migrated or if we need to submit a new application.
Some articles mention that new applicants are receiving e-OCI cards, while others say existing cardholders will move to the new system gradually. I couldn't find a clear step-by-step explanation for people who already have an OCI card.
Has anyone here actually gone through the migration process? Did you receive any email or notification? Were you asked to apply through the OCI Miscellaneous Services portal, or did the migration happen automatically when you renewed your passport or applied for another OCI service?
My OCI details haven't changed, and I don't currently need a reissue. I'm mainly trying to understand whether I should do anything now or simply wait until I need an OCI-related service.
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone in the USA, UK, Canada, or Australia who has recently looked into this.
I went through something similar from the UK a few months ago. Initially, I thought "e-OCI" meant I had to replace my physical OCI card, but that wasn't the case in my situation.
From what I understood, the digital record and the physical OCI card are connected, and there wasn't a separate application just to get an e-OCI card. I only updated my passport details through the official OCI portal because I'd received a new passport.
I didn't have to visit a VFS centre for that particular update. The physical OCI card I already had remained valid, and there wasn't a new card issued simply because I updated my online information.
Of course, if you're applying for OCI re-issuance or another miscellaneous service, the process can be different, so it's worth checking the latest requirements for your specific situation.
My experience in Australia was a little different because I renewed my foreign passport around the same time.
After reading the official guidance, I realised there wasn't a general "migration" application that every OCI holder had to complete. Instead, I updated the required information online and kept copies of the confirmation for my records.
I was initially expecting a replacement OCI booklet, but that never happened because my case didn't require one.
Based on my experience, people often confuse updating OCI records online with applying for a new OCI card. They're not always the same thing. Requirements also depend on factors like your age, passport renewal, and whether any personal details have changed.
From what I've been following, the rollout appears to be gradual.
Friends who submitted fresh OCI applications after the new rules came into effect are being processed through the e-OCI system, whereas existing OCI holders are generally continuing to use their current cards until they need an OCI-related service.
I'd avoid applying for anything unless your passport changes, your personal details need updating, or you're otherwise required to use OCI Miscellaneous Services. Requirements can change, so it's worth checking the latest official guidance before submitting an application.
I'm in Canada and recently renewed my foreign passport.
Instead of applying for a separate e-OCI conversion, I completed the required passport update through the OCI Miscellaneous Services portal. That updated my OCI record online, but I wasn't asked to replace my existing OCI card just because the e-OCI system had been introduced. The online passport update process remains available for eligible OCI holders, while physical reissue is only required in specific situations.
Based on my experience, routine OCI updates and e-OCI migration seem to be connected, but they aren't exactly the same thing.

I recently helped my parents with their OCI records after they renewed their Canadian passports.
The biggest lesson was to identify exactly what service applied to their situation. There are separate processes for passport updates, OCI re-issuance, and other miscellaneous services, so reading the correct instructions makes a big difference.
We completed the online update where applicable, and no additional appointment was needed for that particular case. However, friends of ours who had a name change had to provide extra supporting documents.
Since the OCI rules have changed over the years, I'd recommend verifying the latest guidance before submitting anything rather than relying on older forum posts.
