How often should I check my OCI application status?

I submitted my OCI application through VFS in the USA about five weeks ago. The application was accepted and forwarded to the Consulate, and the Government of India OCI portal currently shows it as under process.

I've been checking the status almost every day because I'm worried that I might miss an update or a request for additional documents. At the same time, I'm not sure whether checking it daily actually makes any difference.

For people who have recently gone through the OCI application process, how often did you check your OCI status? Did you receive an email or SMS when your status changed, or did you notice the update yourself on the online tracking system?

I'm also wondering whether VFS recommends checking at a particular interval. I don't want to contact them unnecessarily if my application is still within the normal processing period.

What worked for others? Is checking once a day enough, or is every few days more practical?

I think the frequency depends on what stage your application is at.

If VFS has just received the application, I'd give the system some time to be updated. VFS USA currently says applications may take several working days to be reviewed in its system and recommends tracking after that period.

Once the application reaches the Consulate, the official OCI status enquiry becomes more useful. The Government of India's OCI website says its status enquiry provides the current status of an OCI application.

I would personally check the OCI portal every few days, monitor email regularly, and keep copies of any status changes. If the application goes beyond the applicable processing timeframe, then I'd check the latest instructions from the relevant VFS centre or Consulate before making an enquiry.

I probably checked mine too often! I was looking at the OCI status every morning and evening, but there was no change for weeks.

Eventually the status changed without me receiving any useful advance information. That's why I wouldn't worry about checking multiple times a day.

One thing I would definitely do is check your registered email and spam folder regularly. If there is an issue with the application or additional documentation is required, you don't want to miss that message.

The VFS tracking system can also show stages such as forwarded to the Embassy, reached the Embassy, dispatched from the Embassy and courier dispatch.

My experience was that checking once every few days was enough.

I checked mine every two or three days rather than constantly. Once it was forwarded to the Consulate, there wasn't much change for several weeks.

The Government of India OCI website has a dedicated status enquiry page where you can check the current application status using your Application ID and passport number.

I also kept an eye on my email because I didn't want to miss a request for additional documents.

For VFS USA applications, their tracking page currently recommends checking the status after the initial processing period rather than repeatedly contacting customer service. VFS also says applicants should not rely solely on email or SMS notifications.

So I'd say checking every couple of days is reasonable, especially if your application is already with the Consulate.
