How often should I check my OCI application status?

I wouldn't be concerned about checking the status regularly. You're not making changes to the application simply by using the status enquiry page.

The official OCI website specifically provides a Track Application Status facility. You enter the Application ID and passport number along with the captcha to view the current status.

Personally, I'd check once every day or two if you're waiting for an important travel date. Otherwise, checking once or twice a week is probably enough for peace of mind.

The bigger issue is whether you have a reason to follow up. A status remaining unchanged for several days isn't necessarily evidence of a problem. If there is a document issue, additional verification, or another requirement, the appropriate authority may communicate with you.

I'd avoid relying on another applicant's timeline as a guaranteed benchmark. OCI applications are handled through different Indian Missions/Posts, and individual cases can differ.

I would personally check the OCI portal every few days, monitor email regularly, and keep copies of any status changes. If the application goes beyond the applicable processing timeframe, then I'd check the latest instructions from the relevant VFS centre or Consulate before making an enquiry.

The VFS tracking system can also show stages such as forwarded to the Embassy, reached the Embassy, dispatched from the Embassy and courier dispatch.
