How Will I Know the Status of My Pan Application?

You can know the status of your PAN application by using the 15-digit acknowledgment number that you received after submitting your application. Just visit the official website where you applied and use this number to track your PAN application status.

Another thing to distinguish is PAN application status versus PAN availability.

Someone may see that an application is being processed and assume the PAN number should already be available. That isn't necessarily the case. The application has to go through processing before the PAN is allotted or generated.

If you applied for an e-PAN, there can also be a separate question about when the electronic PAN document becomes available after PAN allotment.

For tracking, I'd use the acknowledgment/application details from your receipt and the official tracking facility of the service provider you used. Keep your date of birth and other application details available because some tracking systems may ask for additional information.

Requirements and processes can change, so I would also verify the latest instructions on the official Income Tax Department, Protean, or UTIITSL website rather than relying entirely on an older forum post.

I had a slightly different experience. I applied through UTIITSL, so I used its PAN application tracking facility rather than the Protean tracking page.

The important thing is to identify where the PAN application was submitted. The acknowledgment number by itself doesn't mean that every PAN status website will recognize it.

I also noticed that the application status went through different stages. At first, it was basically showing that the application was in the system. Later, it moved toward processing and PAN generation.

If you have submitted supporting documents, keep the acknowledgment receipt and copies of whatever you submitted until the application is completed. They can be useful if there is a problem or if additional information is requested.

I wouldn't worry just because the status doesn't change every day. Processing and status updates aren't necessarily instantaneous.

If you're checking after only a few days, I'd give it some time and then check again using the official tracking facility associated with your application.

In my case, I tracked my PAN application using the same provider through which I submitted the application. I had the acknowledgment number from the application receipt, and that was the main number I used for tracking.

The status initially showed that the application had been received/was being processed. It didn't immediately mean that the PAN had been generated. Later, the status changed after the application was processed.

One thing I would check first is whether you applied through Protean or UTIITSL, because the tracking process can be different. I wouldn't keep checking random PAN status pages because there are quite a few websites explaining the process.

If you submitted the application through an authorized provider, the acknowledgment receipt should normally tell you which system is handling it.

Also, make sure you're entering the acknowledgment/application number exactly as shown on your receipt. A small typing error can result in no status being found.

My experience was that a short period without a status change wasn't necessarily a problem. If it stays unchanged beyond the normal processing period, I'd check the official status facility or contact the relevant application service.

I applied from Australia earlier this year. The online status was my main source of information throughout the process. There weren't many intermediate updates, but the final status reflected when the PAN had been allotted.

I'd also recommend checking your spam or junk folder because one of my emails regarding the application ended up there. Requirements and processing timelines can vary, so it's worth monitoring both your email and the tracking portal.

My experience from Canada was similar. I didn't receive SMS notifications because I had registered my overseas mobile number, but all important communication came through email.

I checked the tracking page every two or three days instead of daily. Once the PAN was generated, I received the e-PAN notification shortly afterward. If your application has only been submitted recently, a lack of updates isn't necessarily a sign that something is wrong.
