AO code full form is Assessing Officer, it is an area code that includes the area code, Ao type, Range code, and Ao number of the assessing officer. It is issued by the Income Tax Department and used to identify the tax jurisdiction of the applicant.

I applied from Australia last year while opening an NRO account in India. I remember spending quite a bit of time on the AO Code page because there were several abbreviations that weren't easy to understand.

One thing that helped me was checking the guidance provided during the application process. I also compared my details with the examples given for NRIs. Fortunately, my application was accepted the first time.

If you're applying as an NRI with no recent residential address in India, it's a good idea to confirm the applicable AO Code using the latest official resources, since these codes and jurisdictions may be updated from time to time.

I applied for a PAN card from the UK earlier this year after becoming a British citizen. I had the same confusion because the AO Code section wasn't very clear.

In my case, the online portal allowed me to search for the AO Code after selecting my applicant category. Since I was applying as an NRI with a foreign address, the available options were much fewer than I expected. I double-checked the instructions on the PAN portal before submitting the application, and everything went through without any objections.

From what I understand, the AO Code is mainly used by the Income Tax Department to identify the assessing jurisdiction for your PAN. If you're unsure, it's worth verifying the code before submitting because requirements and jurisdiction assignments can change.

My situation was a little different because I live in the UAE and already had rental income from India. During my PAN application, I wasn't sure whether the AO Code should be linked to my property location or my overseas address.

After reading the PAN application instructions, I found that the correct AO Code generally depends on the applicant category and jurisdiction rather than simply choosing any nearby city. I selected the code suggested for my application type, and my PAN was issued without any requests for correction.

If your application is still in progress, I'd recommend reviewing the official AO Code list carefully before making a selection. Choosing the correct jurisdiction can help avoid unnecessary delays if additional verification is required.

Here are the steps that I have used to find my AO code from the NSDL website.

Step 1: Go to the NSDL PAN Portal.

Step 2: Select your city of residence.

Step 3: You can see a list of AO codes present in your city.

Step 4: Choose one of the AO codes from the list that appeared on your screen.

Step 5: Click on the 'Submit' button, and see your AO code displayed on the screen.

There were 4 types of AO codes available for the identification of individuals or companies' legal tax.

    1. International taxation: This code is used by non-Indians companies or residents to apply for a PAN card in India.
    2. Non-International Taxation Outside Mumbai: These AO codes are for people who are registered outside Mumbai but located in India.
    3. Non-International Taxation Mumbai: This applied to the companies or individuals that are located in Mumbai, India.
    4. For Defence Personnel: This is used for the individual who serves in the Indian Army or the Indian Air Force.
