To track your PAN card status, you need to visit the official website of the TIN NSDL and select your application type as 'PAN New/Change Request', then enter the acknowledgment number and verify your application status by entering the captcha, and then click on the submit button. After clicking submit, you will see the real-time status of your PAN card.

I had the same confusion when I applied. I was initially checking the Income Tax e-Filing portal because I thought that would show the application status automatically.

What worked for me was going back to the application receipt and identifying the application service/provider. I then used the relevant official tracking facility.

Also, don't confuse PAN verification with PAN application tracking. PAN verification is generally about checking an already issued PAN, while application tracking is about following an application that is still being processed.

If the status says the application is under process, I'd wait unless the system specifically asks for additional information or documents.

If there is an unusually long delay, check the latest instructions from the relevant official source. Procedures can change, and processing can vary between individual applications.

I used UTIITSL for my application, so I didn't use the Protean tracking page. I used the tracking option associated with UTIITSL and entered the application details from my receipt.

The terminology can definitely be confusing because people often use “PAN status” to mean several different things.

There is the status of the PAN application, the actual PAN allotment/generation, and then the delivery of a physical PAN card if one was requested.

In my case, I first saw that the application was being processed. Once the PAN was allotted, the situation was different from simply waiting for the physical card.

I'd recommend keeping the acknowledgment receipt until everything is completed. It contains useful reference information if you need to check the application again.

If your application is only a few days old, I wouldn't submit another application just because the status hasn't changed yet. I'd continue checking the official tracking facility using the details from your original application.

I tracked mine through Protean because that was the provider I used when submitting the application. The acknowledgment number on the receipt was enough to start the tracking process.

The status initially showed that the application had been received and was being processed. It didn't immediately show that the PAN had been generated.

One thing that helped me was checking the acknowledgment receipt rather than searching for a generic PAN tracking page. The receipt indicated which system I had applied through, so I used the corresponding official tracking facility.

I also wouldn't expect the status to change every day. Mine stayed at the same stage for a while before moving forward.

If you applied through UTIITSL, the process can be different, so I'd first confirm whether your application was submitted through Protean or UTIITSL.

For delivery, I think it's useful to distinguish between PAN application tracking and physical card delivery. Even after PAN generation, the physical card may have a separate dispatch/delivery process.

I applied from Australia last month. One thing I noticed is that different tracking portals may display slightly different wording, which can be confusing. I relied on the acknowledgment number throughout the process.

If your application has only been submitted recently, I wouldn't worry too much unless the status remains unchanged for several weeks. International applications sometimes involve additional verification compared to resident Indian applications.

Also, check your spam folder because I almost missed the email containing my e-PAN notification.

My experience in the USA was slightly different. After submitting my PAN application, the tracking page continued showing the same status for almost two weeks. I thought something was wrong, but customer support explained that backend verification can take time.

Eventually, the application moved straight from "under process" to "PAN allotted." I received the e-PAN before the physical card.

If your details exactly match your passport and supporting documents, the process is usually smoother. However, if there's any name mismatch or document issue, they may ask for clarification, so keep an eye on your registered email.
