Can an NRI with an OCI Card Apply for Aadhaar in India?

I'm a U.S. citizen with an OCI Card and currently living in New Jersey. I'll be visiting India for about two months later this year, and I'm trying to figure out whether I'm eligible to apply for an Aadhaar card.

I surrendered my Indian passport several years ago after becoming a U.S. citizen and received my OCI card soon after. I still have a PAN card and an NRO bank account in India. Recently, my bank mentioned that having an Aadhaar number could make certain verification processes easier, but they also said it wasn't mandatory in every situation.

When I searched online, I found mixed information. Some websites mention that only Indian residents can apply, while others say NRIs are also eligible. Since I have an OCI card, I'm not sure whether I need to meet any residency requirement or if I can simply visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre with my OCI card and foreign passport.

Has anyone here applied for an Aadhaar card for an NRI with an OCI card recently? What documents did you submit? Did you use your foreign address or an Indian address? Also, how long did it take before you received your Aadhaar details?

I'd appreciate hearing about real experiences because the information online seems a bit confusing. I understand that rules can change, so I'll also verify everything through UIDAI before applying.

One suggestion is to call the Aadhaar helpline or visit a larger Aadhaar Seva Kendra if possible.

A friend of mine initially visited a small enrolment centre where the staff weren't very familiar with OCI applications. Later, at a bigger centre, the process went much more smoothly because they regularly handled NRI and OCI cases.

Based on our experience, carrying your foreign passport, OCI card, and any address documents that match your application can help avoid delays. Individual cases can differ, and additional documents may sometimes be requested.

My experience in Hyderabad was a little different because I had moved to India on a long-term basis after becoming an Australian citizen with OCI status.

The enrolment officer requested my OCI card, foreign passport, and Indian address proof. Since I was residing in India, they processed my application under the applicable OCI/foreign national enrolment process. My Aadhaar has a validity period applicable to OCI cardholders rather than being treated exactly the same as an Indian citizen's Aadhaar.

If you're only visiting India briefly, I'd recommend confirming your eligibility category with UIDAI before making the trip to the enrolment centre.

I went through this process earlier this year in Bengaluru. I'm a Canadian citizen with an OCI card.

At the Aadhaar Enrolment Centre, they asked for my valid foreign passport, OCI card, and proof of address. The operator selected the NRI enrolment option rather than treating me as a regular resident applicant. My fingerprints, iris scan, and photograph were captured, and I received an acknowledgement slip after the appointment. UIDAI allows NRIs with a valid Indian passport to enrol without the old 182-day residency condition, while resident foreign nationals, including OCI holders, have their own enrolment process depending on their status. It's best to confirm which category applies in your case before visiting the centre.

My Aadhaar details were available a few weeks later through the registered email. Requirements may differ depending on your circumstances, so it's worth checking the latest UIDAI guidance before your appointment.
