I had the same confusion when I applied for my PAN.
The easiest way to think about it is:
PAN number = your actual permanent account number.
Acknowledgment number = application reference number.
You normally receive the acknowledgment number when the PAN application is submitted. At that point, you may not have a PAN number yet.
I used my acknowledgment number to track the application status. After my PAN was allotted, I received the PAN details separately.
Also, don't confuse the acknowledgment number with the transaction number or payment reference. There can be several different reference numbers in an online application, depending on where you applied.
If you're looking at your receipt, the exact label matters. Look for something specifically called “Acknowledgment Number” rather than assuming that every number on the receipt is the same thing
The acknowledgment number is basically a reference number for your PAN application. It isn't the PAN number itself.
When you submit a PAN application, you get an acknowledgment or confirmation containing details of the application. The acknowledgment number is used to identify that particular application while it is being processed.
In my case, I used the acknowledgment number to check the status of my PAN application before the PAN was actually allotted. Once the PAN was issued, the PAN number was separate and was shown in the PAN-related communication.
So don't worry if the acknowledgment number looks completely different from a normal PAN number.
One thing I'd suggest is keeping the acknowledgment receipt until the application is completed. I saved a PDF copy because I needed the reference number when checking the status later.
If you're applying from Canada, make sure you're using the current PAN application process applicable to your circumstances. Requirements for documents and application procedures can change, so it's worth checking the latest instructions from the Income Tax Department or the authorized PAN service provider.
I have got my PAN card acknowledgement number just after submitting my PAN card application offline or online, and in a few minutes, you will get your acknowledgment number in your registered email address.
I have forgotten my PAN acknowledgment number, so I have to get my PAN card acknowledgment number from the acknowledgment slip that I received when applying for a PAN card. However, there is another method to get an acknowledgement number by going to the NSDL or UTIITSL website and providing all the essential details, and getting a copy of the acknowledgment number.

One additional point: if you're trying to check your application status, make sure you're using the correct status-tracking option for the type of PAN application you submitted.
I initially entered my PAN number into the application tracking field because I had misunderstood the instructions. Since my PAN hadn't been issued yet, obviously that didn't work.
The acknowledgment number is associated with the application, while the PAN is the number allotted to you after the application is processed.
I'd also keep the acknowledgment receipt somewhere safe. Even after the application is completed, it can be useful for confirming what was submitted and when.
For an NRI application, I would be particularly careful about the applicant category, address, and identity documents. If something on the application doesn't match your documents, the processing may require clarification.
I wouldn't rely on old forum posts for exact PAN documentation requirements because the application forms and processes can be updated.
