I recently submitted my OCI application in the USA through VFS and received an OCI acknowledgment with an application number.
Before this, I could see that my application had been submitted, but I wasn't sure what the acknowledgment actually means. Does receiving an acknowledgment mean that my documents have already been checked and accepted, or does it simply mean that the OCI application has entered the processing system?
I also noticed that the OCI website uses the acknowledgment date when referring to the processing timeline. I'm trying to understand whether I should start counting the OCI processing time from the date I submitted my documents to VFS or from the date shown on the OCI acknowledgment.
My status currently says “Under Process.” There hasn't been any request for additional documents so far.
For people who have recently applied for OCI in the USA, what happened after you received the acknowledgment? How long did it take for your status to change?
Also, is the acknowledgment number the same thing as the OCI file/reference number used to check the application status?
I had the same confusion when I applied.
The VFS submission happened first, and then I received the OCI acknowledgment later. I initially thought the VFS submission date was the date from which the 30-day OCI processing period started.
After reading the OCI instructions more carefully, I understood that the acknowledgment date is the more relevant date for the published processing timeframe.
My status stayed “Under Process” for several weeks after acknowledgment. There wasn't a daily update, so I wouldn't worry if the status didn't change immediately.
The acknowledgment is better thought of as confirmation that the application has been acknowledged for processing, rather than an approval notice.
From my experience, the acknowledgment was basically the confirmation that my OCI application had been received into the OCI processing system.
I received the acknowledgment after submitting everything through VFS. My application then showed “Under Process” on the OCI status page.
I wouldn't interpret the acknowledgment as meaning that the OCI card has been approved. It doesn't mean the entire verification process is finished either.
For the timeline, I used the online acknowledgment date as my reference because the OCI processing information refers to processing from the date the application is acknowledged.
I kept the acknowledgment number saved because I needed it when checking my application status. VFS also gave me its own tracking information, so there were several numbers involved.
If you're unsure about a particular number, compare the labels shown on your acknowledgment document rather than assuming the VFS tracking number and OCI application number are identical.

One thing I'd add is that getting an acknowledgment doesn't necessarily mean there can never be a document request afterward.
Keep copies of everything you submitted, including the application form, photographs, supporting documents and VFS receipt.
If the Indian Mission/Post needs clarification or additional documentation, the applicant may be contacted depending on the circumstances.
Also, don't rely on random timelines posted online as an official deadline. OCI processing can vary between applications and locations.
If you're checking the status, use the official OCI status-enquiry system and make sure you're entering the correct application/reference details.
