e-OCI Update for OCI Holders with Recently Renewed Passports

I recently renewed my Canadian passport and already have an existing OCI card that I received several years ago. After reading about the new e-OCI system, I'm a little confused about what existing OCI holders are supposed to do after getting a renewed passport.

From what I've read, the process has changed recently, and it seems passport details now need to be updated online rather than always applying for a physical OCI re-issue. I also noticed some discussions mentioning a 90-day window for updating passport details, but I'm not sure whether that applies to everyone or only to certain countries.

My passport was renewed about three weeks ago, and I haven't traveled to India since then. I still have my original OCI booklet, and all my personal details remain the same except for the new passport number and expiry date.

Has anyone recently completed the e-OCI update after passport renewal? How long did it take for the passport details to be reflected in the system? Did you receive a new digital e-OCI, or was it simply linked to your existing OCI record?

I'd appreciate hearing from people who completed this process in 2026. I know the rules have changed recently, so recent experiences would be especially helpful.

I renewed my Australian passport earlier this year and had exactly the same question.

The biggest confusion for me was the difference between updating passport particulars and re-issuing an OCI card. They're no longer always the same thing.

From what I understood while completing my application, if there are no changes to your personal information, you simply update the passport details through the online OCI Miscellaneous Services process. I uploaded my passport bio page, recent photograph, and completed the online request. There wasn't any need to surrender my existing OCI booklet.

My approval took around three weeks. Since individual cases differ, timelines can vary, especially during busy travel periods.

My experience in the UK was slightly different because I renewed my passport a few months before the new e-OCI rollout.

Initially, I thought I needed to apply for a complete OCI re-issuance like people used to do, but after reading the latest guidance, I realized that passport updates are now handled through the OCI Miscellaneous Services portal in many cases. Existing physical OCI booklets remain valid, while the passport particulars are updated digitally.

I completed the online update and later downloaded my e-OCI once everything had been approved. I still keep my original OCI documents for my records, but the digital version has been convenient.

Requirements have changed several times recently, so I'd still recommend checking the latest instructions that apply to your country before submitting anything.

I completed the online passport update about a month ago after renewing my US passport. The process was much simpler than I expected because I didn't have to submit my original OCI booklet.

I logged into the OCI Miscellaneous Services portal, uploaded my new passport bio page and a recent photograph, and received an acknowledgment email shortly afterward. My update was approved in roughly two weeks, although processing times can obviously vary depending on the case and the mission handling it.

One thing I noticed is that the portal clearly asked for the renewed passport details. Since my name and nationality hadn't changed, I only updated the passport information. If your passport was issued recently, I would try to complete the update sooner rather than later because recent advisories mention updating passport particulars within 90 days.
