Traveling with an e-OCI Card and New Passport

There are quite a few old discussions about this because the OCI reissuance rules have changed over time.

If you have a new passport, I would first distinguish between two things:

1. Updating your passport particulars in the OCI records.
2. Applying for a completely new OCI card.

They aren't necessarily the same thing.

I wouldn't assume that an old OCI card becomes invalid simply because you received a new foreign passport. At the same time, I also wouldn't travel without checking whether your latest passport information has been updated in the OCI system.

For airline check-in, the airline may also have its own document-checking process, so having your OCI evidence readily available is useful.

For anyone reading this later, check the current instructions on the official OCI portal and the website of the Indian mission handling your jurisdiction. Requirements can change, and cases involving minors, name changes, damaged documents, or other changes may have different requirements.

I travelled from the UK to India recently after getting a new British passport, so my situation was quite similar.

I had an existing OCI and my old passport number was obviously different from the new one. Before travelling, I updated the new passport particulars through the OCI online system rather than applying for a completely new OCI card.

At the airport, I carried my new British passport and my existing OCI documentation. I also kept a copy of the old passport with me because the old passport contained the details associated with my OCI, although nobody at immigration asked me to produce it.

One thing I would not rely on is an old article saying that you automatically need a fresh physical OCI card every time you renew your passport. There have been changes to the OCI updation/reissuance process, so some older forum posts are confusing.

I would check that the new passport details have actually been updated and that you received the relevant confirmation before travelling. I’d also check the current OCI instructions applicable to your circumstances because requirements can change.

My experience was slightly different because I renewed my Australian passport and updated the OCI particulars only after receiving the new passport.

The important part, in my case, was making sure the new passport information was correctly reflected in the OCI records. I didn't apply for a new OCI just because the passport number changed.

I would be careful with the term “e-OCI,” though. An electronic OCI document or online record isn't necessarily the same thing as having a separate immigration status. Your OCI status is what matters, while your current foreign passport is the passport you travel on.

I carried:

• New Australian passport
• Existing OCI card/details
• Old passport
• Copies of the OCI approval/update confirmation

The airline staff checked my travel documents, and the Indian immigration process was straightforward.

If your trip is only three weeks away, I'd complete the passport update process now rather than leaving it until the airport. If anything doesn't match, you have some time to contact the relevant Indian mission or check the official OCI portal.

I think a lot of the confusion comes from the recent changes to the OCI system.

A family member completed the online passport update earlier this year and downloaded the updated e-OCI before traveling from London to Mumbai. Everything went smoothly, but they still carried the old passport because it was easy to keep with the travel documents.

One suggestion is to print the e-OCI instead of relying only on your phone. Internet access isn't always reliable during international travel, and having a paper copy made things easier when documents were checked.

Also remember that airlines sometimes have different levels of familiarity with OCI updates than immigration officers do, so carrying supporting documents can save time.

My experience was a little different when flying from Toronto.

The airline representative wasn't familiar with the newer e-OCI process and initially questioned why my physical OCI showed a different passport number. I explained that I had already updated the details online and showed the downloaded e-OCI.

After checking with a supervisor, they accepted it without any problem. Immigration in India was straightforward and only verified my documents.

Since then, I always travel with:

• New passport
• Physical OCI card
• Printed e-OCI
• Old passport, if available

It may seem unnecessary, but it avoids unnecessary discussions at check-in.
